Tom Hanks’s documentary series World War II With Tom Hanks just dropped three new episodes

The series airs on Sky History and follows his long history with WWII storytelling — from Saving Private Ryan to Band of Brothers to Masters of the Air

Hanks says he has been “wrestling” with why he keeps returning to the war for “poetry, solace and enlightenment”

His 2020 film Greyhound is also seeing a resurgence on Apple TV+

Tom Hanks has now made more WWII content than most history professors, and he’s apparently not done thinking about why.

Three new episodes of his documentary series World War II With Tom Hanks just dropped, adding to what has become one of the most personal projects of his career. The series airs on Sky History, and Collider called it a must-watch for anyone who’s followed his decades-long relationship with the subject.

“When I was a kid, every adult I knew shared one thing in common,” Hanks says at the top of the series — and from there it builds into exactly the kind of expansive, immersive documentary you’d expect from the man who produced Band of Brothers and Masters of the Air.

Why He Keeps Going Back

In a recent interview, Hanks reflected on his first WWII project — being cast in Saving Private Ryan in 1998 — and what’s kept him returning ever since. “I’ve been wrestling with this just recently,” he said, trying to articulate why the war continues to give him “poetry, solace and enlightenment.”

It’s a fair question. Between Saving Private Ryan, The Pacific, Band of Brothers, Masters of the Air, Greyhound, and now this documentary series, Hanks has spent more of his career exploring the Second World War than almost any other filmmaker or actor working today. The answer, he suggests, has something to do with how the war shaped the adults who shaped him — a generational through-line that he’s still tracing.

Meanwhile, Greyhound Is Having a Moment

Separately, his 2020 Apple TV+ film Greyhound — a lean, efficient naval thriller that got lost in the pandemic shuffle — is apparently back in heavy rotation on the platform. If you’ve never seen it, the new episodes of the documentary series are a good reminder to fix that.

Lizzy Caplan has been cast in Season 5 of Apple TV+’s Emmy-winning drama The Morning Show

She’ll play Gwen, described as “a passionate and uncompromising Broadway theater director”

Caplan joins a stacked wave of new additions including Jeff Daniels, Reneé Rapp, Jesse Williams, and Sean Hayes

It’s not yet confirmed whether Caplan will be a guest star or a recurring player

Season 5 plot details remain under wraps; Season 4 wrapped on Apple TV+ last November

The Morning Show keeps adding to its already stacked roster. Lizzy Caplan is the latest big name to join the Apple TV+ drama for its upcoming fifth season, Deadline first reported. She’ll play Gwen, “a passionate and uncompromising Broadway theater director” — which, yes, is a very specific job description for a show set inside a morning news network, and we’re already intrigued.

Whether Gwen is a guest arc or a full recurring role hasn’t been confirmed, but either way, Caplan is walking into excellent company.

A Season 5 Cast That Keeps Getting More Interesting

Caplan is the latest in a string of high-profile additions to Season 5. Jeff Daniels is on board as Lukas, a self-made billionaire. Mean Girls star Reneé Rapp will play Samantha, a rising UBN star. Grey’s Anatomy alum Jesse Williams joins as Vernon, UBN’s new head of news. And Sean Hayes rounds out the newcomers in a role yet to be detailed.

They’re all joining the show’s core ensemble — Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, who also executive produce, alongside Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Jon Hamm, Karen Pittman, Nicole Beharie, and Nestor Carbonell.

Plot details for Season 5 are being kept tightly under wraps. Season 4, which landed last fall, dealt with media mergers and AI in a post-UBA-NBN merger newsroom. Season 5’s addition of a Broadway theater director suggests the show is pulling in a new cultural thread — though exactly how Gwen fits into the chaos of morning television remains to be seen.

Why Caplan Is a Natural Fit Here

If you’re going to drop into one of TV’s most awards-hungry dramas, it helps to arrive with a résumé like Caplan’s. She’s been a fixture of prestige television for two decades — from Freaks and Geeks and True Blood to Party Down and Masters of Sex on Showtime. More recently, she led Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction reboot opposite Joshua Jackson (earning an Emmy nomination for it), earned another Emmy nod for the Hulu limited series Fleishman Is in Trouble, and most recently appeared alongside Robert De Niro and Angela Bassett in Netflix’s conspiracy thriller Zero Day.

Two Emmy nominations in recent years, a string of prestige projects — she fits right into the Morning Show ecosystem.

And that ecosystem has been good to its cast. Season 3 pulled in 16 Emmy nominations total, with Billy Crudup taking home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series — his second Emmy win for playing Cory Ellison. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon both received Lead Actress nominations, and Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman, and Holland Taylor all landed Supporting Actress nods (four of the six nominees in that category that year).

Season 4 is still Emmy-eligible, so nominations for that run haven’t come yet. But if the show follows its recent pattern, Season 5 should land on Apple TV+ sometime this November — which means Caplan’s debut as Gwen could be arriving before the end of the year.

Apple TV+ has greenlighted Disavowed, a spy thriller series starring and executive produced by James Marsden.

Marsden plays CIA case officer Brad Griffin, fired mid-mission and chasing a $15 million bounty on an assassin.

The series comes from Iron Man and Uncharted writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway — their first TV project.

It deepens Marsden’s growing Apple TV+ presence alongside his current role on Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2.

No premiere date has been announced yet.

James Marsden is staying very busy — and very Apple. The streamer has greenlighted Disavowed, a new action thriller series with Marsden starring and executive producing, marking yet another high-profile project for an actor who seems to be everywhere right now.

In Disavowed, Marsden plays Brad Griffin, a legendary CIA case officer who gets abruptly fired in the middle of a global hunt for an elusive assassin — one who just killed his colleague. Stripped of his credentials and cut off from the intelligence world, Brad goes rogue and decides to chase the $15 million federal bounty on the assassin’s head himself. It’s a premise tailor-made for the kind of tense, globe-trotting thriller Apple has been leaning into hard.

The series was created by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, the writing duo behind the film that literally launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe — 2008’s Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr. and directed by Jon Favreau, which grossed over $585 million worldwide. More recently, they wrote and executive produced Uncharted with Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland, and also have Kraven the Hunter with Aaron Taylor-Johnson on their résumé. Disavowed marks their first foray into television, and they’ll executive produce alongside veteran showrunner Tom Spezialy, Marsden himself, and Blue Marble Pictures’ Theresa Kang and Caroline Garity.

Blue Marble Pictures, for what it’s worth, is the company behind Apple’s acclaimed drama Pachinko — so this team knows how to deliver for the streamer.

A Long Road to Greenlight

This one had been quietly in motion for a while. Casting for the lead role began as far back as last July, Marsden received the offer in September, and it took another eight months before Disavowed was formally greenlit with him officially attached as star and EP. The wait, apparently, was worth it.

The role keeps Marsden firmly in Apple’s orbit. He currently stars opposite Jon Hamm in Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2, playing Owen Ashe — a role he stepped into for the show’s second run. That series alone would be enough for most actors. But Marsden is operating at a different level right now.

The Marsden Moment

It’s been a remarkable stretch for the two-time Emmy nominee. He earned his first Emmy nomination for playing President Cal Bradford in Hulu’s Paradise — a role he returned to for Season 2 in 2026 — and previously picked up both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Amazon’s Jury Duty. His TV résumé also includes Westworld, Dead to Me, and 30 Rock.

On the film side, he’s currently starring in Hulu’s Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, and later this year he’ll finally suit up again as Scott Summers — aka Cyclops — in Avengers: Doomsday, as the X-Men make their full-scale entry into the MCU. That’s a lot of plates spinning at once.

Disavowed doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but with the greenlight now official and a cast and creative team locked in, the clock is running. Given everything else Marsden has going on, it’s almost impressive he had room on the calendar.
