Tom Hardy has reportedly been fired from MobLand and will not return for Season 3

According to Puck News, Hardy clashed with producers Jez Butterworth and David Glasser during Season 2 production

Reported issues include chronic tardiness, unsolicited script notes, and frustration over the show’s expanding ensemble focus

Producer Jez Butterworth allegedly threatened to quit before Paramount chose to drop Hardy instead

There’s serious trouble in MobLand. Tom Hardy has reportedly been fired from Paramount+’s hit crime drama ahead of Season 3, following a string of on-set clashes during the production of the show’s upcoming second season.

The news was first reported by veteran entertainment journalist Matthew Belloni in his Puck newsletter, who detailed how Paramount opted not to pick up Hardy’s option for a third season after tensions reportedly boiled over on set. According to Belloni, Hardy, 48, was repeatedly late to set, consistently pushed to give notes on scripts, and attempted to change scripted dialogue during filming. But perhaps the most revealing detail in the report is this: Hardy was apparently unhappy that a show initially built around him was evolving into more of an ensemble piece — one that increasingly shared the spotlight with co-stars Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.

Belloni wrote that Hardy “expressed his displeasure that a series initially built around him was increasingly becoming an ensemble showcase” for his high-wattage co-stars. The situation grew tense enough that writer and executive producer Jez Butterworth threatened to walk from the project entirely. Paramount, faced with the choice, sided with the producers — and Hardy was out.

A Show at the Top of Its Game — Without Its Lead

The timing couldn’t be more awkward. MobLand, created by Ronan Bennett and executive produced by Guy Ritchie, premiered on Paramount+ in March 2025 and became an immediate phenomenon. The show drew over 26 million viewers, hit number one in the United Kingdom, and dominated both domestic and international streaming charts. When Paramount renewed it for Season 2 in June 2025, co-CEO Chris McCarthy called it “a resounding triumph” and praised the “powerhouse performances” of Hardy, Brosnan, and Mirren by name.

Executive producer David C. Glasser said at the time that the team had found “the exact formula” for the next great mob series. And Butterworth himself — the same producer who would later reportedly threaten to quit over Hardy’s behavior — described the collaboration as “nothing short of inspiring.”

Hardy stars as Harry Da Souza, a fixer for the Harrigan crime family, led by Brosnan’s Conrad and Mirren’s Maeve. Season 1 followed Da Souza as he navigated a brutal feud between the Harrigans and the rival Stevensons, with the war ending in significant bloodshed. Hardy also serves as an executive producer on the series.

Season 2, which wrapped production in March and is expected to arrive before the end of the year — per Guy Ritchie’s own comments to Screen Rant — will still feature Hardy as Da Souza, along with the full returning ensemble: Brosnan, Mirren, Paddy Considine, Anson Boon, Joanne Froggatt, Mandeep Dhillon, Jasmine Jobson, Lara Pulver, Janet McTeer, Toby Jones, and newcomers Johnny Flynn and Ophelia Lovibond. It’s Season 3 where Hardy’s absence would be felt — and where the show faces its biggest challenge yet.

Hardy’s History — And What Fans Are Saying

None of this is entirely new territory for Hardy. The actor has been candid about his reputation over the years. “I have a reputation for being difficult,” he told Esquire back in 2015. “And I am. I am, actually. But I’m not unreasonable. It used to be that if somebody hurt me I’d lash out a bit, in order to get them to stop. It ultimately comes from fear.”

Longstanding rumors about a feud with Charlize Theron during the making of Mad Max: Fury Road followed him for years, and were later explored in depth in Kyle Buchanan’s book Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road. For many observers, the MobLand situation feels like a familiar pattern.

Fans, though, aren’t ready to move on so easily. Social media has erupted with reactions, and they’re divided. Some viewers are flat-out declaring MobLand finished without its lead — Hardy’s Da Souza was the gravitational center of Season 1, and they don’t see how the show survives without him. Others have pointed to Hardy’s documented history on set and noted, with some resignation, that this outcome wasn’t exactly unpredictable.

What makes the situation especially complicated is that Da Souza isn’t a peripheral character who can quietly disappear between seasons. He’s the engine of the whole story. Paramount will either have to recast the role — a move that would guarantee its own wave of backlash — or restructure the show around its remaining ensemble in a way that viewers actually buy into. Neither option is easy.

It’s also worth noting that, according to Belloni’s report, Hardy’s contract did give him the option to walk from Season 3 if he chose to. In the end, Paramount pulled the trigger first.

Representatives for Hardy, Paramount+, and MobLand producer 101 Studios have all declined to comment. Season 1 of MobLand is currently streaming on Paramount+, and Season 2 does not yet have an official premiere date.
