Kathy Griffin is back home and back with her dogs — and she’s not keeping quiet about how she got there. The comedian shared a candid health update on Instagram Thursday, May 21, revealing she’d spent the night in the hospital after complications from a routine colonoscopy.

“I spent the night in hospital because I had complications from my colonoscopy,” Griffin wrote in a screenshot from her Notes app, captioning the post “A not so tech savvy update.” She also included a selfie that showed her looking upbeat despite the ordeal. “I know, I know, very sexy but I am home now with the doggies where I belong.”

Griffin, 65, didn’t elaborate on what exactly went wrong or why she underwent the procedure in the first place — but the fact that she shared it at all is very on-brand. She’s long been one of Hollywood’s most open voices when it comes to health and body stuff, often using her platform to encourage fans to take their own medical care seriously.

A History of Health Honesty

This isn’t the first time Griffin has been through something serious and chosen to talk about it publicly. In August 2021, she revealed on Instagram that she’d been diagnosed with lung cancer — despite never having smoked. “I’m about to go into surgery to have half of my left lung removed,” she wrote at the time. “The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage 1 and contained in my left lung. Hopefully, no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing.” She came through that surgery and has continued working and performing since.

Way back in 2010, Griffin took health transparency to a whole other level — getting a poolside pap smear on her show My Life on the D-List to raise awareness about cervical cancer screenings. “I started talking to girlfriends of mine, my age and younger, and I just can’t believe how many women are afraid to get a pap smear or they forget or they’ve gone 10 years without doing one,” she told E! News at the time. “The message is, if you see me doing something so outrageous — some may say repulsive — that should make it easier for you to pick up the phone and call your doctor.”

Her fans showed up for her in the comments this time too. “Feel better soon ❤️” wrote one follower. “Ugh… I’m so sorry this has happened. Bounce back, dear Kathy,” added another. “All that matters is that you are better and home!! Keep resting ❤️” wrote a third.

She’s Not the Only One

Interestingly, Griffin’s update came just days after Amy Schumer opened up about her own colonoscopy experience. Speaking at an event for Amanda Hirsch’s Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Schumer, 44, said: “I feel happier than I’ve ever been before. I actually had, kind of, a botched colonoscopy, so I’m not feeling very sexual.” Two comedians, two colonoscopies, one week — it’s a lot.

Griffin has otherwise been keeping busy lately. She recently made headlines for revealing on The Good Guys podcast with Josh Peck and Ben Soffer that she paid $218,000 for her third facelift — a number she delivered with her trademark self-awareness. “Do you know how many d*** jokes I have to tell for $218,000? I have to do at least two shows,” she joked. She also mentioned that she went to the same surgeon previously used by Kris Jenner, though opted for a less extreme procedure. “I’m just such a money person. I can’t bring myself to do it,” she said of the pricier options.

For now, though, Griffin is resting at home — dogs by her side, sense of humor fully intact.
