The timing is striking. Just days before her announcement, Vanessa was spotted celebrating a major family milestone — her daughter Kai’s high school graduation. “I was getting these steroid injections, and so it gave me this thing called Cushing syndrome — which I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard,” she said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in 2025. “I learned that I had something called ‘moon face,’ and I’m starring in a movie and there’s a camera in my face, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God.”

Cushing syndrome — caused by an excess of cortisol in the body — is characterized by a round, full face, thin skin, and weight gain. Schumer wrote in a 2024 issue of the News Not Noise newsletter that learning her diagnosis felt like a turning point. “I feel reborn,” she said at the time, noting that some forms of Cushing can be fatal or require brain surgery.

As the swelling from the syndrome began to dissolve on its own, Schumer also started a weight loss journey with the help of GLP-1 medications. She’s been transparent about that process too — including the rocky start. “Three years ago, I tried Wegovy. I was puking, I couldn’t handle it. I don’t know if they’ve changed the formula, whatever,” she said in a March 2025 Instagram video. She eventually found a better fit with Mounjaro, and in December 2025 told her followers she had lost 50 pounds.

She’s also been on hormone therapy after discovering she was in perimenopause. “They put me on estrogen and progesterone because I realized I was in perimenopause and my symptoms have disappeared,” she explained in the same March video. “My hair is fuller, my skin is better, I have more energy, I want to get down more, if you know what I mean. I’m talking about sex. So that’s been great.”

Life After the Split

Schumer’s health journey has run parallel to a major shift in her personal life. In December 2025, she announced on Instagram that she and husband Chris Fischer were ending their marriage after nearly eight years together.

“Blah blah blah Chris and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage after 7 years. We love each other very much and will continue to focus on raising our son,” she wrote — and in true Schumer fashion, she pre-empted the tabloid speculation: “not becisse [sic] I dropped some lbs and thought I could bag a basket and not because he’s a hot James Beard award-winning chef who can still pull some hot tail. Billy Bob Thornton has spent decades figuring out what his body will and won’t tolerate — and it turns out, the answer has been in his blood the whole time.

The Landman star, 70, opened up during a recent episode of the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast about the strict dietary life that comes with having type AB-negative blood, one of the rarest blood types on the planet. “I have type AB negative blood, which is the rarest type in the world,” Thornton told host Howie Mandel. “It’s like less than 1% of the population of the world has it.”

The condition, he explained, comes with a key biological catch: fewer digestive enzymes. That deficiency is the root of a lifetime of food sensitivities — allergies to wheat and dairy, a need to avoid shellfish, and a hard pass on pork and beef. Thornton discovered his blood type back in 1980, but the symptoms had been there his whole life. He just didn’t know what was causing them.

“When I was a kid, you know, I grew up in Arkansas and East Texas, and I ate everything,” he said. “I just assumed everybody felt like s— after they ate. I didn’t know.”

What a Typical Day Looks Like on the Billy Bob Thornton Diet

When Mandel asked what Thornton had actually eaten that day, the answer was pretty spartan: a bowl of blueberries and a decaf coffee. Looking ahead to later in the day, he was optimistic. “I’m going to have some gluten-free chips with some dairy-free cream cheese,” he said. “So I’m really looking forward to that.”

Working within those constraints takes creativity — and sometimes a willingness to improvise with whatever’s in the green room. Thornton recalled being at a Landman event where the spread was essentially off-limits: one tray of salami and prosciutto, another full of crackers he couldn’t touch. “Normally in these green rooms, they got a spread. I mean, you can usually find something, you know?”

Then he spotted a bowl of red and white grapes. And some spicy Dijon mustard. He took a chance.

“I’m like, ‘Oh, OK, so I’ll be bored as hell with this,'” he said of the grape. “And then I saw some spicy Dijon mustard and thought, ‘I wonder…'” The result? He called it “one of the best things I’ve ever had in my lifetime. So now it’s become a thing for me.”

Thornton has long described himself as “a vegan who cheats” — a label he put on himself during a 2020 appearance on the Mental Amanda podcast, where he admitted to occasionally breaking for salmon or halibut, or the pull of good Texas barbecue. A Long History With His Health

This isn’t the first time Thornton has had to reckon with his body in a serious way. In 1998, while filming U Turn, he dropped 59 pounds — surviving largely on canned tuna and Twizzlers to look gaunt for the role — and developed an eating disorder. Two years later, he was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles following a viral infection, which quickly became tabloid fodder with rumors flying that he’d had a heart attack or could only eat orange-colored foods.

He’s also been open about his OCD diagnosis, which he’s connected to a difficult childhood marked by abuse. In a 2004 interview with Ann Curry, he described the hypervigilance that defined his early years: “I would hear the car pull in the driveway around 4 o’clock usually, and I would, in my head, I would say if I can count to a hundred five times before I hear the car come in the driveway, everything’s going to be okay.” The constant mental calculation, he said, is emotionally and physically exhausting.

Now, at 70 — a milestone he’s spoken about with both pride and perspective — Thornton seems to have found a kind of peace with all of it. What struck Danson most wasn’t just the physical wake-up call. It was what the experience unlocked in him emotionally.

“What it’s done for me, the biggest gift of all: you can be curious about other people, you can listen, you can be supportive, caring, you can witness them,” he told Bertinelli. “And I do believe that the rest of my life is to be curious and listen. That’s the best thing I can offer.”

There’s something quietly moving about a man who has spent decades being one of the most watched faces on television arriving at the conclusion that the most valuable thing he can do now is pay attention to others.

The conversation itself had a certain serendipity to it — Danson and Bertinelli had somehow never really met before the podcast taping, despite both being fixtures of American television for decades. Bertinelli has been in the business since 1975. Danson, of course, became a household name as Sam Malone across all 273 episodes of Cheers‘ 11-season run from 1982 to 1993 — a show he ultimately chose to end by walking away, leaving executives with no interest in continuing without their lead.

Since then he’s kept busy in ways that have only deepened his reputation — from Becker to Damages to his beloved turn as Michael in The Good Place, and most recently starring in A Man on the Inside.
