The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives on digital platforms May 19, 2026, with 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray following June 16.

The home release includes over an hour of bonus features covering Easter eggs, behind-the-scenes footage, and cast interviews.

The film has grossed nearly $942 million globally after seven weeks in theaters — the highest-grossing film in the US so far in 2026.

The sequel officially kickstarted the Nintendo Cinematic Universe, introducing Fox McCloud in a Star Fox crossover sequence.

A third Mario film hasn’t been announced yet, but Jack Black has suggested it could arrive in 2029.

\n\n

After seven weeks lighting up the box office, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is finally coming home. Nintendo and Illumination’s animated sequel will debut on digital platforms on May 19, 2026, with a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD rollout following on June 16 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment — and the home release is loaded.

\n\n

The package includes over an hour of never-before-seen bonus content, from a deep dive into the film’s many hidden Easter eggs to exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews with the all-star cast. No subscription required for the digital version — just a purchase, and you’re in.

\n\n

What’s in the Bonus Features

\n\n

For anyone who’s already seen the film and wants to go deeper, the special features are genuinely extensive. Next Level: Making The Super Mario Galaxy Movie goes behind the scenes with the creators at Nintendo, the filmmakers at Illumination, and the cast. Secrets of the Galaxy is essentially an Easter egg guide led by the filmmakers themselves — given how densely packed the film reportedly is with references, that one alone could be worth the price of admission for longtime fans.

\n\n

Other featurettes include Cosmic Tunes, in which composer Brian Tyler walks through how he reimagined the franchise’s iconic game music into a full cinematic score, and Power-Ups, where the cast shares their personal favorites from the film. There are also character-focused pieces on Mario and Luigi, Peach and Rosalina, Bowser and Bowser Jr., and Toad and Yoshi — breaking down how the cast brought each to life.

\n\n

One caveat worth knowing: there are no deleted scenes included in the package.

\n\n

The Box Office Story Behind the Movie

\n\n

The home release arrives as the film sits at roughly $942 million globally — tantalizingly close to the $1 billion mark, though it’s looking like a stretch at this point. For context, the original The Super Mario Bros. Movie finished its theatrical run at $1.36 billion back in 2023, setting a high bar the sequel hasn’t quite matched. Still, against a reported budget of just $110 million, the Galaxy movie has been a massive win for both Nintendo and Illumination by any reasonable measure.

\n\n

In the US alone, the film has pulled in over $413 million, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2026 so far. In Japan — where the film is technically classified as a foreign production despite Mario being a Nintendo character — it set a new record for the highest-grossing foreign film of fiscal year 2026, according to Oricon News, with ¥6,017,108,670 (roughly $38 million) as of mid-May. It’s also the second-highest grossing film overall in Japan this year, trailing only Detective Conan: Highway No Datenshi.

\n\n

The critical reception has been more complicated. Reviews landed mixed to negative — IGN gave it a 6/10 — and even Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto admitted the response caught him off guard. Audiences, though, clearly didn’t care.

\n\h2>The Cast, the Crossover, and What’s Next

\n\n

The film brings back Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key, with new additions including Brie Larson, Donald Glover, Glen Powell, and Benny Safdie. The story sends Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and the gang across the galaxy to face new worlds and new threats, with Rosalina and Bowser Jr. joining the mix — and, in what’s become the most-talked-about moment of the film, a Star Fox anime sequence that officially folded Fox McCloud into what fans are already calling the Nintendo Cinematic Universe.

\n\n

As for what comes next: a third Mario film hasn’t been officially announced, but Jack Black has floated 2029 as a likely window. A Donkey Kong spinoff is confirmed for 2028. And Nintendo’s live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is on its way next year.

\n\n

In the meantime, you can pre-order The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Amazon ahead of the May 19 digital launch — on disc or via Prime Video.

Illumination dropped the final trailer for Minions & Monsters, opening in theaters July 1, 2026

The film is set in 1920s Hollywood and follows two new Minions — James and Henry — trying to make it in the movie business

It premieres as the opening film at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 21

The voice cast includes Trey Parker, Jesse Eisenberg, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Allison Janney, and Zoey Deutch

This is the seventh entry in the Despicable Me franchise and the third film to focus entirely on the Minions

The Minions are going to Hollywood — and they’re bringing monsters with them. Illumination has released the final trailer for Minions & Monsters, and if you weren’t already counting down to July 1, you might be now.

The film is set in the 1920s, at the dawn of cinema, and follows an entirely new tribe of Minions — led by two fresh faces named James and Henry — as they attempt to conquer Old Hollywood. Their plan: make a monster movie. Their solution to the casting problem: summon actual monsters. From a book. Because of course.

The official synopsis calls it “the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.” Totally true. Obviously.

The trailer has a genuinely surprising vibe — part Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, part Lovecraftian horror, and entirely unhinged in the best way. There’s also a new addition to the crew: a small, talking green monster freed from the pages of that summoning book, and he is immediately, inexplicably adorable.

A Stacked Cast and the Man Behind the Minions

Pierre Coffin is back in the director’s chair — a role he knows well, having helmed the first three Despicable Me films and the original Minions movie. He also, as ever, voices the Minions themselves, a job he’s held since their big-screen debut in 2010. He co-wrote the screenplay with Brian Lynch, who also wrote Minions and both Secret Life of Pets films and serves here as executive producer. Chris Meledandri, Illumination’s founder and CEO, produces alongside Bill Ryan, who also produced The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The voice cast is stacked: Trey Parker, Jesse Eisenberg, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Allison Janney, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, and Phil LaMarr. That’s a lot of talent in service of a lot of chaos.

Minions & Monsters will have its world premiere as the opening film at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 21 — the same honor Despicable Me 4 received at the 2024 edition of the festival.

A Big Summer for Animation

Illumination is riding some serious momentum into this release. The studio’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel — produced alongside Nintendo — is closing in on $900 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest animated hits in recent memory.

Minions & Monsters is the seventh entry in the Despicable Me franchise overall and the third film to put the Minions front and center, following the 2015 original and 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru. It arrives into what’s shaping up to be a loaded summer for animation — sharing the season with Toy Story 5, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, and the long-awaited live-action/animation hybrid Coyote vs. Acme.

But honestly? A Minions movie set in 1920s Hollywood with Lovecraftian monsters and a goblin sidekick might just be the most original pitch in that entire lineup. Every kid you know is going to be speaking Minion-gibberish by the Fourth of July weekend. Consider yourself warned.

Minions & Monsters opens in theaters on July 1.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has grossed over $900 million worldwide since its April 1 release.

It’s on track to become Hollywood’s first billion-dollar film of 2026 before the end of May.

Critics panned it with a 42% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences gave it a Verified Hot 88%.

The franchise has now crossed $2 billion total, a first for any video game film series.

Jack Black has hinted a Super Mario 3 could arrive as early as 2029.

Hollywood has its first billion-dollar movie of 2026, and it’s coming from the Mushroom Kingdom. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has already surpassed $900 million at the worldwide box office — just over a month after opening on April 1 — and is firmly on track to cross the $1 billion mark before May is out.

The animated sequel, starring Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Brie Larson, set the record for the biggest global opening weekend of 2026, and it hasn’t really slowed down since. Against a $110 million budget, the film has already earned more than eight times its production cost, making it a massive win for Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo.

Critics weren’t exactly on board — the film sits at just 42% on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers calling it everything from “disposable” to “stultifyingly dull.” But audiences? They showed up in force and loved it, pushing the Verified Hot audience score to 88%. That gap tells you everything about who this movie was made for.

A Franchise That Just Keeps Growing

The 2023 original, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, grossed $1.35 billion worldwide against a $100 million budget — more than 13 times its cost — and also earned an additional $29.1 million from physical media sales. It was one of the biggest films of that year, second only to Barbie. The sequel was always going to face enormous expectations, and while it may fall short of the first film’s final tally, it’s still poised to finish comfortably in 10 figures.

Together, the two films have turned the Super Mario franchise into a $2 billion property — the first video game film franchise to ever reach that milestone, and the only franchise in history with two films each opening to more than $350 million worldwide. That’s a genuinely remarkable run.

The Galaxy sequel is based on the beloved 2009 Nintendo game and brings back the key characters in a new story, directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Pierre Leduc, and Fabien Polack, with Matthew Fogel returning as writer and Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto producing.

How the Rest of 2026 Stacks Up

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie didn’t have much competition on its way to this milestone. The year’s other big earner so far is Project Hail Mary — the Ryan Gosling-led adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel — which has pulled in over $636 million but looks likely to fall short of the billion-dollar threshold. The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has already crossed $430 million in just two weekends, driven heavily by viral word-of-mouth despite a polarizing reception. Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers has added $371 million, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened to a strong $233 million globally last weekend.

Still, none of them are touching Mario. The Galaxy Movie does have some competition coming — Mortal Kombat II and The Mandalorian and Grogu are both hitting theaters later this month, and those are the kinds of releases that could eat into its weekly earnings. But the family audience that’s been driving this sequel isn’t exactly the same crowd rushing to see Mandalorian opening weekend, so the overlap may be limited.

And the rest of 2026’s release calendar is stacked. Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are the obvious $1 billion-plus contenders. Shrek 5 and Toy Story 5 could both be major performers. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and Dune: Part Three round out a year that’s already shaping up to be the strongest at the global box office since 2019, when ticket sales hit $42.5 billion worldwide. Last year closed at an estimated $33.6 billion — 2026 is already looking like a significant rebound.

What’s Next for Mario on the Big Screen

Given how well both films have performed, the question isn’t really whether the franchise will continue — it’s how fast. Nintendo has already confirmed an animated Donkey Kong film is in development, following the character’s appearance in the 2023 original. A Universal Pictures listing has also quietly revealed an untitled Illumination/Nintendo event film slated for April 12, 2028, though the studio hasn’t confirmed whether that’s the Donkey Kong movie or something else entirely.

And then there’s what Jack Black let slip: the franchise is apparently eyeing a Super Mario 3, potentially arriving in 2029 — a similar three-year gap to the one between the first two films. Nothing is officially confirmed yet, but with a $2 billion franchise and another billion-dollar hit almost certainly in the bag, it would be a shock if this story ended here.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is playing in theaters now.
