Marco Perego is the first producer in Cannes Film Festival history to have three films in main competition simultaneously.

Zoe Saldaña has a lot to be proud of these days — and right now, all of that pride is pointed squarely at her husband.

Marco Perego, the Italian-born producer, painter, and former professional soccer player turned filmmaker, has just made Cannes Film Festival history. He’s the first producer ever to have three films premiering in the festival’s main competition simultaneously — a milestone that The Hollywood Reporter called out as truly unprecedented. And when Saldaña saw the news, she didn’t hold back.

“Three films at Cannes. Three worlds you believed in when maybe not everyone else did,” she wrote on Instagram on May 14, alongside a screenshot of the THR piece. “That is not luck, that is you, exactly as you are: stubborn in the most beautiful way, uncompromising in your love for what cinema can be.”

She kept going. “You have always known that art is not decoration. It is the main course, the whole meal, the reason we sit down together at all. And you fight for that truth every single day, even when it costs you.”

“I am so proud of you it almost doesn’t fit into words,” the Guardians of the Galaxy star concluded.

The Three Films Turning Heads on the Croisette

Perego’s competition slate is, by any measure, stacked. Paper Tiger, directed by Croisette regular James Gray, is arguably the most high-profile of the three — an ensemble film featuring Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Miles Teller. Then there’s Fjord, a Romanian production led by Sebastian Stan. And perhaps the most anticipated: Minotaur, the first film in nine years from celebrated Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, whose previous work includes Leviathan and Loveless.

That’s already a remarkable lineup. But Perego’s Cannes footprint goes even further. He also produced Butterfly Jam — starring Barry Keoghan, Riley Keough, and Harry Melling — which is screening in the Directors Fortnight section, outside of competition. Four films total at one festival. The man came to play.

How a Soccer Player Became One of Cinema’s Quiet Power Players

Perego’s road to Cannes is not a traditional Hollywood story. He grew up in a small town in Italy, where his parents regularly introduced him to films from around the world — an early education that shaped how he thinks about cinema not as entertainment, but as cultural and social expression. He went on to play professional soccer before becoming an accomplished painter, and only later found his way to filmmaking through that same deep personal love of the art form.

He co-founded Leaf Entertainment with partner Michael Cerenzie with a clear mission: champion filmmakers with distinct artistic voices — the kind of auteur directors whose visions are often too ambitious or unconventional for traditional studio backing. Perego has described that responsibility in personal terms, saying the need to protect and amplify those voices feels more urgent now than ever.

His 2023 directorial debut, The Absence of Eden, starred Saldaña herself, and it was through that project that Leaf Entertainment began to take shape as a serious production force. The results at this year’s Cannes suggest the company has arrived.

A Partnership Built on Mutual Admiration

Saldaña and Perego have been together since 2013, marrying that same year — and in a gesture that says a lot about who he is, Perego took her last name when they wed. They’re parents to three boys: twins Cy and Bowie, 11, and younger son Zen, 9.

It’s been a big stretch for both of them, personally and professionally. Saldaña took home an Academy Award in 2025 and has been back on screens reprising her role as Neytiri in the Avatar franchise. Perego, meanwhile, is also gearing up to direct again — his next film, Petrichor, will star Isabella Rossellini and Valeria Golino.

Hollywood marriages are notoriously fragile things. The schedules, the distance, the pressure — it takes something real to keep it together. What Saldaña’s tribute captures, more than anything, is a woman who genuinely sees her partner. Not just the milestone, but the work and belief and sacrifice that got him there.

“All my love, always,” she signed off.

None of the three competition films have U.S. release dates yet, but all are expected to land in theaters later this year. In the meantime, The Absence of Eden — the film where this whole chapter really began — is streaming now on Hulu.
