Martina McBride announced Thursday she is withdrawing from the Freedom 250 Great American State Fair — a 16-day concert series on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., running June 25 through July 10 — saying she was misled about the event’s nature

“I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading,” McBride wrote on Instagram. “What we were told is not, in fact, what is happening”

McBride is the fourth performer to exit since the lineup was announced May 27; Morris Day and The Time and Young MC also dropped out in the days immediately following the announcement

Freedom 250 was launched by President Donald Trump and was declared the official branding of all 250th anniversary celebrations by the Interior Department — though it has been described publicly as nonpartisan

Less than 48 hours after Freedom 250 announced the lineup for its Great American State Fair concert series, Martina McBride became the fourth artist to pull out. The country singer posted to Instagram Thursday saying she had accepted a performance slot under the impression the event was nonpartisan — and that turned out not to be the case.

“I would like to talk to you and clear the air,” McBride wrote. “I will not be performing at the Great American State Fair on June 25th. I was presented with the opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading. What we were told is not, in fact, what is happening.” The statement came after she had already faced criticism online simply for being on the bill, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Freedom 250 was launched by President Donald Trump to organize the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The Interior Department declared it the official branding for those events. The organization has described itself as nonpartisan, a framing that multiple artists say does not match what they experienced once they looked more closely at the event’s structure and affiliations, per Variety.

A Growing Exodus

McBride is the fourth departure since the lineup dropped May 27. Morris Day and The Time announced they would not perform, followed by Young MC, before McBride made it official Thursday evening. The exits began almost immediately after the announcement, suggesting that several artists hadn’t fully understood what they had signed up for before the public reveal, per Billboard. The Great American State Fair is still scheduled to run June 25 through July 10 on the National Mall.

Bruce Springsteen and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello announced the “Power to the People” protest festival on Wednesday while performing together at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., as part of Springsteen’s Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour

The one-day event is set for October 3 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland — one month before the midterm elections — and will be headlined by Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Brittany Howard, and Joan Baez

Throughout the Land of Hope and Dreams tour, Springsteen has opened each show with a declaration: “We are here to call upon the righteous power of art, of music, of rock ‘n’ roll in these dangerous times”

The festival is organized by Morello and is framed around “freedom, justice, equality and rock ‘n’ roll”

Bruce Springsteen isn’t waiting until after the tour to make his point. The Boss announced a major protest festival Wednesday night from the stage at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., joined by Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, who has been touring with him on the Land of Hope and Dreams run.

The Power to the People festival is set for October 3 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland — putting it squarely one month before the midterm elections. The headliner list runs from Springsteen himself to Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Brittany Howard, and Joan Baez, per PBS NewsHour.

The announcement came near the end of Springsteen’s short American tour, which has been explicitly political from the first night. At every stop, Springsteen has told the crowd: “We are here to call upon the righteous power of art, of music, of rock ‘n’ roll in these dangerous times.” He has also used the tour to spotlight activist organizations, welcoming groups into each venue to do outreach and solicit support, per Billboard.

Festival Details

Merriweather Post Pavilion, in Howard County, Maryland, is one of the mid-Atlantic’s signature outdoor venues — a practical choice for a large-scale event of this kind. The festival’s stated themes of “freedom, justice, equality and rock ‘n’ roll” track closely with the rhetoric Springsteen has been deploying throughout the tour, per CBS News Baltimore. No ticket details have been announced yet.

Olivia Rodrigo, 23, pushed back against online criticism of her babydoll dress looks in a new interview on The New York Times’ Popcast, calling the reaction “really disturbing” and saying it shows “how we really normalize pedophilia in our culture”

The backlash began after she wore a pink-and-blue minidress in her “Drop Dead” music video and escalated when she wore a Génération78 babydoll dress at Spotify’s Billions Club Live concert in Barcelona on May 8 — critics described the looks as “infantilizing” and accused her of wearing “sexualized children’s clothing”

Rodrigo pointed out the double standard directly: “I have worn outfits that are revealing on stage. I’ve been on stage in a sparkly bra and little shorts… and that wasn’t inappropriate, but me fully covered up in a dress that people deem to be childlike was inappropriate”

Per Complex, she connected the criticism to riot grrrl fashion history and broader patterns of how society sexualizes young girls, calling those reactions “freak” reactions

“Drop Dead” is from her forthcoming third album You Seem Pretty Sad

Olivia Rodrigo has had enough. The “Drivers License” singer spent part of a new New York Times Popcast interview addressing the months-long online debate over her babydoll dresses — and she didn’t hold back.

The controversy started in April when Rodrigo wore a pink-and-blue minidress in the video for “Drop Dead,” a single from her upcoming third album You Seem Pretty Sad. It intensified after she performed at Spotify’s Billions Club Live concert in Barcelona on May 8 in a Génération78 babydoll dress and knee-high black boots — a look that set off a fresh wave of takes, with some describing the outfit as that of a “sexualized child” and others writing things like “A grown woman wearing children’s clothes… she keeps giving me the ick.”

Rodrigo’s response, recorded for an upcoming Popcast episode and previewed widely this week, was pointed. “That’s been making me so upset,” she told Us Magazine. “Not even for me. People can say whatever they want.”

‘Fully Covered Up… Was Inappropriate’

What bothered her, she said, was the logic the critics were applying. “What’s really disturbing is I have worn outfits that are revealing on stage,” Rodrigo continued, per Newsweek. “I’ve been on stage in a sparkly bra and little shorts, which is my right — that’s fun, I felt cool and comfortable in that. And that wasn’t inappropriate, but me fully covered up in a dress that people deemed to be childlike was inappropriate.” She said the pattern was “really disturbing” and added: “It really shows how we really normalize pedophilia in our culture.”

Per Complex, she tied the reaction to riot grrrl fashion — a deliberately transgressive, anti-sexualization aesthetic with deep roots in ’90s punk and feminist music — and to broader double standards in how young women’s bodies get policed and interpreted regardless of what they actually wear. The framing, she suggested, says more about the critics than it does about the dress.

The state court in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, sentenced a 21-year-old man to 15 years in prison on Thursday for plotting a jihadist attack on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concerts in Vienna — the plot that forced the cancellation of three sold-out shows in August 2024

The defendant, identified only as Beran A. under Austrian privacy rules, is an Austrian citizen who pleaded guilty in April as his trial began; before the court retired to deliberate, he told the room: “I would just like to say that I am sorry”

He was found guilty on multiple charges, primarily terrorism-related offenses, by the Wiener Neustadt court; the 15-year sentence reflects the severity of a plot that caused widespread disruption and fear among fans across Europe

The Vienna cancellations in August 2024 affected roughly 170,000 ticket holders across the three dates; the plot was foiled by Austrian authorities in a joint operation before any attack occurred

Swift has not publicly commented on the verdict

Nearly two years after Austrian authorities foiled a planned jihadist attack on Taylor Swift’s Vienna concerts, the man at the center of the plot has been sentenced. The state court in Wiener Neustadt handed down a 15-year prison sentence Thursday to the 21-year-old Austrian citizen identified in court proceedings only as Beran A., finding him guilty on multiple terrorism-related charges, per Variety.

The defendant had pleaded guilty in April when his trial began. Before the court retired to consider its verdict, he addressed the room directly: “I would just like to say that I am sorry,” according to the AP. The court accepted the guilty plea and convicted him on the full range of charges.

The case dates to August 2024, when Austrian security services uncovered the plot days before three consecutive Eras Tour dates in Vienna — shows that had sold out roughly 170,000 tickets in total. The concerts were cancelled as a precautionary measure, sending shockwaves through the global Swiftie community and raising broader questions about security at major stadium events. Swift acknowledged the cancellations at the time but has not commented on the court’s verdict.

A Plot Foiled Before It Could Begin

Austrian authorities worked with international partners to identify and detain Beran A. and other suspects before any attack took place. The Wiener Neustadt investigation established that the plot had an Islamist extremist motivation and that the target was chosen specifically because of the massive crowd the concerts would draw, per WTOP/AP.

The 15-year sentence is one of the longest handed down in Austria for terrorism-related offenses in recent years. Beran A. will be in his mid-30s before he is eligible for release.

Suki Waterhouse, 34, spoke to Variety ahead of the release of her new album Loveland, describing Robert Pattinson as a muse for the record — a collection built around motherhood, nostalgia, and the way her relationship with him fundamentally changed after they had their daughter

Waterhouse and Pattinson became engaged in December 2023 and welcomed a daughter in March 2024; they have kept the child’s life largely out of the public eye, and Waterhouse said they intend to keep it “as private as possible”

On the emotional reality of early motherhood: “Internally, there’s been quite a lot of turmoil and just wondering if I’m doing the right thing. And especially, oh my God, the hormones right after you have a baby are so intense”

On how the baby changed her relationship with Pattinson: “I don’t want to say back in love with my partner, because it sounds like I was out of it, which I was never. But it’s also a new relationship. Your old relationship has been wiped out… we’ve survived this”

Waterhouse attended this year’s Met Gala in a plunging pink Michael Kors gown inspired by Greek statues carved from rose marble; she is best known as a star of Daisy Jones and The Six

Suki Waterhouse met Variety for a conversation in the Notting Hill pub across the street from the flat where she spent most of her 20s. She was already there when the reporter arrived, ordering a Coke and fries, curled up in an armchair in a Vivienne Westwood duster jacket. The setting was deliberate — she’s been feeling nostalgic, she said, and that feeling is at the center of her new album Loveland.

The album is also, in large part, about Robert Pattinson. Waterhouse — the model, actress, and singer who starred in Daisy Jones and The Six — told Variety she used her fiancé as a muse for the record, drawing on the way their relationship was reshaped after they had their daughter together in March 2024. The couple, who got engaged in December 2023, have kept their daughter almost entirely out of the public eye. “I think it really is possible” to protect a child’s privacy, she said, and they intend to do it.

What she was willing to share was the emotional texture of those first months of parenthood, which she described as genuinely destabilizing — even as something beautiful came out the other side. “Internally, there’s been quite a lot of turmoil and just wondering if I’m doing the right thing,” she told Variety. “And especially, oh my God, the hormones right after you have a baby are so intense.”

“A New Relationship”

The effect on her relationship with Pattinson was, by her description, a kind of reset. “It’s like [I got] belief back in myself,” she said, “and then also being… I don’t want to say back in love with my partner, because it sounds like I was out of it, which I was never. But it’s also a new relationship. Your old relationship has been wiped out, and so it’s building that new one and kind of celebrating the beauty in that, like, we’ve survived this.”

That dynamic — surviving something together, finding a new version of a relationship on the other side — is the emotional core she’s channeling into Loveland. The album also draws on nostalgia, which the Notting Hill setting made palpable: she is writing about the person she was in her 20s, in that flat across the street, and about who she’s become since.

The week before the Variety interview, she had been at the Met Gala, turning up in a plunging pink Michael Kors gown designed to evoke Greek statues carved from rose marble. The Loveland era is in full swing.

Tom Morello picked his moment. On the closing night of Bruce Springsteen’s “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour at Washington, D.C.’s Nationals Park on May 27, Morello stepped up to the microphone and announced Power to the People Festival — a one-day all-star event near the nation’s capital, timed to arrive exactly one month before the midterm elections.

The festival takes place Saturday, October 3 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. Per Stereogum, the lineup is headlined by Bruce Springsteen (in a “special guest” billing), Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Joan Baez, and Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes. Rounding out the bill: Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Cypress Hill, Killer Mike, Dropkick Murphys, Jack Black (performing alongside Roman Morello, Revel Ian, Yoyoka Soma, and Hugo Weiss), Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless, The Linda Lindas, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, grandson, and The Neighborhood Kids. Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the iconic Obama “Hope” poster, will contribute artwork and perform a DJ set.

Morello, who co-founded Rage Against the Machine and has spent decades as one of rock’s most outspoken activists, told The Washington Post the vision is straightforward. “The mantra of the show is a very clear one,” he said. “It is a show about peace, love, justice and music.” In a press statement, he put it more succinctly: “The Power to the People festival is about freedom, justice, equality and rock and roll.”

The Context Around the Show

The announcement lands at a charged moment. Morello has been visibly active in recent weeks — he was photographed singing at an anti-ICE protest in New York in May — and the Springsteen tour he joined has been described by multiple outlets as politically charged, with the Boss directing pointed commentary toward the current administration throughout the run.

The festival’s website describes it as “a non-partisan celebration,” but the timing and the guest list tell a more specific story. The October 3 date falls exactly one month before the midterm elections. The lineup reads like a greatest-hits of artists who have been outspoken during the current political moment — Springsteen, Killer Mike, Joan Baez, the Dropkick Murphys. Morello framed the event in broader terms: “It’s a concert about the power everyday human beings have when they come together — through music, art, community and action — to shape our country and our planet.”

Tickets go on sale Saturday, May 30 at 10 AM ET. A presale opens Friday, May 29.

Paul McCartney, 83, revealed on BBC Radio 2’s Tracks of My Years that Prince recorded a cover of the Beatles’ “The Long and Winding Road” — the 1970 Let It Be ballad — which McCartney didn’t learn about until after Prince’s 2016 death

“I’m going to ask them [Prince’s estate]. I could make it into something really good,” McCartney said

He praised Prince’s playing on the recording: “He plays some really good guitar on it” — and described Prince generally as “a wizard”

The appearance was tied to McCartney’s new solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, during which he also discussed the artists who shaped him growing up in Liverpool

Paul McCartney found out Prince covered one of his songs — and he found out the way most people find things out: someone just told him.

The 83-year-old Beatle appeared on BBC Radio 2’s Tracks of My Years with host Vernon Kay this week, and in the course of the conversation he let slip an anecdote that raises a real question for Prince’s estate. McCartney said that after Prince’s death in 2016, someone mentioned to him that Prince had recorded a cover of “The Long and Winding Road” — the sweeping ballad McCartney wrote that closed out the Beatles’ 1970 Let It Be album.

“I was with some guy a couple of years ago, so it was after Prince had died, and this guy said, ‘Have you heard Prince do "Long and Winding Road"?'” McCartney recalled. “I said, ‘Well no, that’s one of my songs!'”

He’s heard it since. His verdict: “He plays some really good guitar on it.”

As for what happens next, McCartney was direct about his intentions: “I’m going to ask them,” he said of Prince’s estate. “I could make it into something really good.”

Prince’s vault at Paisley Park is famously enormous — thousands of recordings that may never see a commercial release. His estate has shared material selectively since his death, and any decision to put out the “Long and Winding Road” cover would be theirs to make. But McCartney’s public interest in the recording puts a new kind of pressure on the conversation.

During the same interview, McCartney was unambiguous about how he rates Prince as a musician. He called out Prince’s 1986 single “Kiss” as a personal favorite, praising the minimalism of the arrangement: “He took a lot from Hendrix, but he was a great player. It’s just so simple — again to pull that kind of thing off, you can do a kind of simple thing, and it can just sound simple but not great, but his sounds simply great. He’s a wizard.”

McCartney’s appearance on the show coincided with the release of his new solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, in which he traces the music of his Liverpool childhood and the path it took him from the Merseyside docks to global fame.

Morris Day and The Time did not agree to play Freedom 250. They would like you to know that.

Earlier this week, the lineup was announced for the Great American State Fair, a 16-day event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., tied to the Freedom 250 celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Day and The Time were listed as headliners for a June 27 show.

Day, 68, responded on Instagram almost immediately. The post featured text on a blue and purple background: “Contrary To Rumor, Morris Day & The Time Will Not Be Performing At The ‘Great American State Fair.'” His caption: “It’s A No For Me,” followed by the sunglasses smile emoji.

He didn’t elaborate further, but the vehemence of the denial — and its speed — made the message clear enough. This was not a scheduling conflict. This was a choice.

Fans had already been expressing discomfort about his listed participation before Day posted. The festival’s political associations have made it a flashpoint for artists who’d rather not be adjacent to the current administration’s celebration programming, and Day’s public pullout — framed as correcting a “rumor” even while organizers had advertised him — put the dispute squarely in the open.

The remaining Great American State Fair lineup, per Stereogum, includes Milli Vanilli and C+C Music Factory, among others. The event runs through July 4.

Olivia Rodrigo dropped the full tracklist for her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, on May 26

The album is split into two sides: “Girl So in Love” (7 tracks) and “You Seem Pretty Sad” (6 tracks)

Song titles include “Maggots for Brains,” “Purple,” “What’s Wrong With Me,” and “Cigarette”

Previously released singles “Drop Dead” and “The Cure” appear on the tracklist

The album arrives June 12 via Geffen Records

Olivia Rodrigo has a song called “Maggots for Brains” on her next album and honestly, after GUTS, nothing should surprise us anymore.

On Tuesday, the 22-year-old posted the full tracklist for You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love to Instagram — all 13 tracks, displayed in pink embroidered lettering against a photo of Rodrigo looking pensive by a park swing at night. Very on-brand.

The album is divided into two sides, like a vinyl LP or cassette: “Girl So in Love” carries seven tracks, and “You Seem Pretty Sad” closes with six. Whether that structural split reflects a mood arc, a narrative, or just a vibe will become clear when the record actually arrives on June 12 via Geffen Records.

The Track List

Beyond the already-released “Drop Dead” and “The Cure,” the album includes titles like “Purple,” “What’s Wrong With Me,” “Cigarette,” and “Maggots for Brains” — which is a sentence that required a moment of pause to type.

“The Cure,” which Rodrigo called her “favourite on the album” and “one of my favourite songs I’ve ever made,” came out recently alongside a music video set in a cardboard hospital where she hunts for the antidote to heartbreak. Co-written with longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, it’s driven by acoustic guitar and digs into self-doubt and misplaced trust. “Drop Dead” was the lead single.

The Third Chapter

Sour made her a star. GUTS proved it wasn’t a fluke. Now, with a title as disarmingly contradictory as You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, Rodrigo appears to be leaning even further into the duality she’s always written best: the happiness that comes with a catch, the heartbreak with a wink.

Thirteen tracks. June 12. And at least one song whose name no one saw coming.

The singer reunited with will.i.am, Taboo, and apl.de.ap on stage at the 2026 American Music Awards on Monday night to accept the Best Throwback Song award for “Rock That Body,” the group’s 2010 anthem that beat out Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” and 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” in the new AMAs category celebrating classic songs that have found second lives on TikTok and social media.

It was the first time the original Black Eyed Peas lineup appeared together at a major awards show since Fergie stepped away from the group in 2018 to focus on her solo career. And the 51-year-old was not hiding how much it meant to her.

“What a moment,” she said, visibly emotional while tightly gripping will.i.am and apl.de.ap’s hands. “I want to thank all of the fans for voting for this so I can stand up here right now with my longtime friends and brothers, the Black Eyed Peas.”

The Son Who Finally Listened

The sweetest part of the night came when Fergie talked about her 12-year-old son Axl, whom she shares with ex-husband Josh Duhamel. Despite spending years creating massive hits with the Black Eyed Peas, it was “Rock That Body” that finally made the preteen give his mom’s music a chance.

“I get to now say this. I finally, finally get to say this on TV: Hi, Axl! ‘Rock That Body’ we did it!” she beamed from the stage.

She also turned to the fans making TikToks and Instagram videos with the group’s music. “Sometimes, the content you make is so big and the feelings are so big for me it’s overwhelming to look because there’s so much love that you put into it,” she told the crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. “I just wanna say thank you from the bottom of my heart. I see you. You mean so much.”

The Road Back

Fergie was the lead vocalist of the Black Eyed Peas from 2002 to 2018. During that run, the group sold more than 80 million albums worldwide and topped the Billboard Hot 100 three times with “Boom Boom Pow,” “I Gotta Feeling,” and “Imma Be.”

When will.i.am confirmed her departure in 2017, he was clear about where things stood: “Nobody is replacing Fergie. She’s working on her solo project at the moment.” J. Rey Soul has since taken over vocal duties, but the original chemistry was never replicated.

The classic lineup got together quietly in December to celebrate all four members turning 50. Monday’s AMAs appearance was the first time that reunion went public — and went big.

Standing on that stage in Las Vegas, holding hands with the guys she once toured the world with, Fergie looked like she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
