The Numbers Are Absurd

The No. 1 was just the headline. The full picture is staggering.

Drake charted a record 42 songs on the Hot 100 in a single week — all from his three new albums, ICEMAN, HABIBTI, and MAID OF HONOUR, which dropped May 15 on OVO Sound/Republic. That demolishes Morgan Wallen’s previous single-week record of 37 entries from last year. With 40 of those 42 being debuts, Drake also became the first artist ever to accumulate more than 400 career Hot 100 entries.

James was in that arena: he attended Kendrick Lamar’s “The Pop Out: Ken & Friends” concert at the Kia Forum in Inglewood on June 19, 2024, the concert that became a cultural flashpoint during Drake and Lamar’s nine-track public feud. James wasn’t just in the crowd — he was seen vibing to “Not Like Us,” Lamar’s most pointed diss at Drake. Russell Westbrook and DeMar DeRozan eventually appeared on stage with Lamar that night too.

Drake follows it up with a line that doubles as a shot at both LeBron and Kendrick simultaneously: “Please stop asking what’s going on with 23 and me — he’s not, it’s in my DNA.”

The “23” references James’ jersey number, and “DNA” is a direct nod to Kendrick Lamar’s 2017 banger from his Grammy-winning album DAMN — which includes the line, “I got loyalty, got royalty inside my DNA.” Drake is essentially saying: don’t ask me about my loyalty to LeBron, and while we’re at it, here’s a Kendrick reference too.

How a Brotherhood Became a Beef

The Drake-LeBron friendship was once genuinely one of the more visible cross-industry bromances in pop culture. In 2018, Drake brought James on stage at a Los Angeles show while performing his verse on Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode.” And in 2023, after Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest, Drake walked both LeBron and Bronny out at his LA stop of the It’s All a Blur Tour. The moment was emotional and public.

“I don’t know if you saw who walked me to the stage tonight,” Drake told the crowd that night, “but the gentleman that walked me to the stage tonight is my brother. He goes by the name of LeBron James. And in 2009, when nobody believed in anything I had going on, that same guy showed up to a release party for a mixtape called ‘So Far, So Gone.'”

Drake even had LeBron’s St. Vincent-St. Mary high school jersey tattooed on his left arm. But in July 2025, he revealed he’d covered it — replacing it with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander‘s No. 2 and the word “Thunder” layered on top. That tattoo swap told the story before any lyrics did.

The “Make Them Remember” bars aren’t the first shots Drake has taken at James since the Lamar feud either. In January 2025, a track called “Fighting Irish Freestyle” surfaced — a reference to James’ high school — with the line, “The world fell in love with the gimmicks, even my brothers got tickets.” Then in February 2025, during a live performance in Perth, Drake changed a lyric in “Nonstop” from “How I go from six to 23 like I’m LeBron” to “How I go from six to 23 but not LeBron, man.” Each move was deliberate. Each one landed.

For his part, James addressed the state of their relationship in September on the podcast “360 With Speedy,” keeping it measured. “Always wish him the best obviously,” James said. “Different places right now, currently. He’s doing his thing, I’m doing mine, but it’s always love for sure.”

LeBron Isn’t the Only Name Drake Called Out

Iceman is a sprawling settling of scores. Kendrick Lamar is the through-line — Drake raps on the album opener “Make Them Cry,” “I’m in the cut just loading rebuttals” — and nearly every track has at least one sub aimed at Lamar or the West Coast broadly. On “Dust,” he raps, “What was the year you said you had slaps, cause I don’t remember it going like that, I don’t remember one word of your raps.” He also takes aim at Mustard: “Mustard heard about us, gotta catch up to the slaps / You ain’t had one since me and YG rapped.”

Rick Ross and DJ Khaled also get called out. On “Make Them Pay,” Drake raps, “Dawg, I was Adin Ross with streams before Adin Ross had ever streamed” — widely read as a reminder to Rick Ross of how much Drake contributed to his commercial run during the 2010s. Ross had joined the pile-on against Drake during the Lamar feud with his own diss track, “Champagne Moments.” For Khaled, Drake raps: “And Khaled, you know what I mean / The beef was fully live, you went halal and got on your deen” — a dig at Khaled for staying neutral as things escalated.

Not every NBA reference was a diss, though. Drake also shouted out Stephen Curry on “2 Hard 4 The Radio,” rapping, “Back when they was asking about where Davidson was at / now everybody got a blue 30 on they back.” A rare warm moment on an album that otherwise has a lot of scores to settle.

Drake also opened up on “Make Them Cry” about what the 2024 feud actually cost him personally: “What died back in 2024 was a big piece / So it’s like this s— is me, but it isn’t me / Y’all keep on asking what it did to me / That’s what it did to me.” He revealed his father is currently battling cancer, touched on his ongoing lawsuit against UMG, and reunited with Future, rapping on “Ran to Atlanta” that “me and Hendrix back by popular demand.”

There’s also been significant fan speculation about Drake’s label situation. Lines like “I’m better off independent, they should let him leave” and “Swear my label gotta free me, baby” have listeners wondering if this triple-drop is part of a larger strategy to fulfill — or escape — his deal with Republic Records, a division of UMG. All three projects are listed on streaming platforms as OVO “under exclusive license to Republic Records.”

As for LeBron — the Oklahoma City Thunder just swept his Lakers out of the playoffs. Drake, who replaced LeBron’s tattoo with the Thunder’s star player on his arm, surely noticed the timing. Sometimes the universe does the work for you.

Nobody was ready for three.

Drake spent over a year building toward Iceman, his long-awaited ninth studio album. Fans had tracked every cryptic post, every livestream episode, every diamond-profile-pic change from his affiliates. Then, at the end of his Iceman Episode 4 livestream on Thursday night, he pulled out three hard drives — and text on screen read: “I made this so that I could make this.” Moments later, the titles appeared: Habibti. Maid of Honour. ICEMAN. All three dropping at midnight.

“All 3 albums dropping at midnight from the biggest sound,” the screen declared. And just like that, Drake went from releasing one highly anticipated album to simultaneously dropping his ninth, tenth, and eleventh studio LPs — over 40 songs in total.

It’s the kind of move that only a handful of artists in the world could even attempt.

The Rollout That Led Here

The road to Iceman started in early 2024, when Drake first referenced Val Kilmer’s “Iceman” character from Top Gun on social media and shared a screenshot of a folder titled “2.0 – Iceman.” But the official rollout didn’t kick off until July 2025, when he launched the Iceman YouTube livestream series with Episode 1, debuting new songs including “What Did I Miss?” Two more episodes followed, each spawning singles: “Which One” featuring Central Cee, and “Dog House” featuring Yeat and Julia Wolf.

He’d also been setting the stage in person. During a stop on his Anita Max Win Tour in Australia, Drake told the crowd: “Eventually, when the time is right, Drizzy Drake alone by himself is gonna have to have a one-on-one talk to y’all. When the time is right, I’ll be back with another album — a one-on-one conversation with y’all that you need to hear.”

Then came the stunt that broke the internet before the music even dropped. Last month, Drake had a 25-foot ice installation erected in a Toronto parking lot, with the album’s release date hidden somewhere inside. Fans showed up with pickaxes. Popular Twitch streamer Kishka was the one who cracked it open, found the bag inside, and delivered it to Drake’s house — where the date was revealed: May 15. Drake even gave him a cash prize for his efforts.

On March 29, while inducting Nelly Furtado into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the Juno Awards, Drake confirmed the album was “coming soon.” By the time Episode 4 aired Thursday night — a full visual album experience projected onto the CN Tower, described officially as “a theatrical interpretation of Drake’s thoughts and experiences over the past two years” — the anticipation had been building for 297 days.

Nobody still expected three albums.

What’s on Each Album

The Episode 4 stream functioned as a full visual album premiere, with music videos for songs primarily shot in and around Toronto. Cameos in the videos include comedian Shane Gillis, DJ Akademiks, underground rapper Molly Santana, comedian BenDaDonnn — and Drake’s son, Adonis.

ICEMAN is the centerpiece: 18 tracks including “Make Them Cry,” “Burning Bridges,” “2 Hard 4 The Radio,” “National Treasures,” “Ran To Atlanta” featuring Future and Molly Santana, and “B’s On The Table” featuring 21 Savage. Production credits include Gordo, BNYX, Tay Keith, OZ, FnZ, Noah “40” Shebib, Boi-1da, and others. The cover art — a hand wearing a sequined glove — is a clear nod to Michael Jackson.

MAID OF HONOUR is the most personal of the three. Its cover features Drake’s mother, Sandi Graham, as a young woman holding a bridal bouquet, layered with an image of Drake and his father, Dennis Graham. The 14-track project features Sexyy Red on “Cheetah Print,” Central Cee on the previously released “Which One,” Popcaan on “Amazing Shape,” and Stunna Sandy on “Outside Tweaking.”

HABIBTI — an Arabic term of endearment meaning “my love” or “my darling,” in its feminine form — runs 11 tracks and features Sexyy Red again on “Hurrr Nor Thurrr,” PartyNextDoor on “Fortworth,” and Loe Shimmy on “I’m Spent.” Its cover shows a black-and-white photo of a woman covered in masking tape, only her eyes visible.

The Shadow of Kendrick Lamar

There’s no separating this release from what happened in 2024. Drake’s battle with Kendrick Lamar — which escalated out of Metro Boomin and Future’s “We Don’t Trust You” and the Lamar feature “Like That” — ended with “Not Like Us” winning multiple Grammys and reshaping how a significant portion of the public viewed Drake. Since then, he’s largely stayed out of the music conversation, keeping his grievances channeled into legal battles with Lamar and his label.

These albums are his answer.

An early leak of a track called “1 AM in Albany” suggested Drake had plenty to say — with reported bars taking aim at Lamar, LeBron James, J. Cole, and Joe Budden. On Iceman, songs like “Burning Bridges” and “2 Hard 4 The Radio” double down on that energy. He reportedly raps lines like “White kids listen to you cuz they feelin’ some guilt” and takes shots at the streaming numbers behind “Not Like Us,” continuing his claim that UMG engaged in fraudulent botting to inflate the song’s popularity. He also appears to address attempts at reconciliation: “You saw my brother, you was tryna fix it, now you drop your album and you back dissing.”

There’s also a track where Drake reportedly burns down a pro-Kendrick bot farm — which, whatever you think of the beef, is a very Drake way to make a point.

But the albums aren’t wall-to-wall beef music. Across all three projects, Drake pivots into pop-radio-friendly R&B territory, relationship cuts, and the kind of songs that built his fanbase in the first place. Maid of Honour in particular reads like a more personal, reflective body of work — fitting, given the family tribute on its cover.

For the fans who never left, this is the vindication they’ve been waiting for. For those who walked away after “Not Like Us,” it’s Drake’s clearest shot at winning them back. And for everyone in between — the casual listeners, the culture-watchers, the people who just want to know if he’s still got it — these three albums are the answer he’s been building toward for two years.
