Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed the search for the next James Bond is officially underway, with auditions already in progress.

Nina Gold — the casting director behind Game of Thrones, The Crown, and five Star Wars films — has been hired to find 007.

The film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, with producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman.

Gold is known for discovering unknown talent, having cast Daisy Ridley and John Boyega in The Force Awakens.

Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, and Louis Partridge are among the names generating the most buzz for the role.

The search for the next James Bond is real, it’s official, and it’s already happening. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed Thursday that auditions for the iconic role of 007 have been underway for the past few weeks — and the woman they’ve trusted to find him is one of the most respected casting directors working today.

Nina Gold, the British casting legend behind Game of Thrones, The Crown, and five films in the Star Wars franchise, has closed a deal to serve as casting director on James Bond 26, with sources confirming her involvement to both Variety and Deadline. Amazon MGM released a statement alongside the news: “The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”

It’s the kind of careful, measured language you’d expect from a studio handling one of the most valuable franchises on the planet. But the fact that auditions are already happening — and that Gold is in the room — is the loudest signal yet that this thing is moving.

Why Nina Gold Is Such a Big Deal

In most productions, hiring a casting director wouldn’t be headline news. But this isn’t most productions, and Nina Gold isn’t most casting directors.

Her résumé reads like a checklist of prestige television and blockbuster cinema. On the TV side alone: Game of Thrones, The Crown, Baby Reindeer, Slow Horses, Chernobyl, 3 Body Problem, The Day of the Jackal, and Wolf Hall. On film: The King’s Speech, The Imitation Game, The Martian, Conclave, Les Misérables, The Power of the Dog, Wonka, and Prometheus, among many others. She was also one of the first people ever nominated for the brand-new Academy Award for Achievement in Casting, earning the nod for her work on Hamnet.

But what makes her particularly compelling for this job is her track record of finding stars before they were stars. Gold cast Emilia Clarke, Claire Foy, and Eddie Redmayne in some of their earliest major roles. She cast Aaron Taylor-Johnson in his breakout film, 2009’s Nowhere Boy. And perhaps most relevant of all — she’s the person who looked at two relatively unknown actors named Daisy Ridley and John Boyega and decided they should carry a Star Wars movie.

That instinct for the right unknown quantity is exactly what the Bond producers appear to be looking for. Sources indicate the studio wants a “fresh face” in the role — someone who can grow into the franchise rather than arrive as an already-established star.

The franchise’s previous casting director, Debbie McWilliams, was the one who found Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, and Timothy Dalton. Gold is being asked to do something equally monumental: find the face of Bond for the next decade and beyond.

The Team Behind Bond 26

Gold will work alongside director Denis Villeneuve — the filmmaker behind Dune, Arrival, and Sicario — as well as producers Amy Pascal (Spider-Man) and David Heyman (Harry Potter). The screenplay is being written by Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, who is still putting the finishing touches on the script. Sources tell Deadline that full auditions are technically still a beat away for that reason, though the early casting process has clearly begun.

Knight has already teased what fans can expect from his take on the character. “I’m hoping that, being a Bond fan for so many years, it will be imbued into me and I will be able to produce something that’s the same but different, and better, stronger, and bolder,” he said.

Amazon paid $20 million for full creative control of the franchise, and with ambitions to build out a wider universe of programming around the 007 world, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The studio is reportedly targeting a production start in 2027, with a rumored theatrical release in November 2028.

At CinemaCon last month, Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM’s head of film, offered some reassurance to anxious fans. “We’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect,” she said. “It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly. What I can tell you is this: When you pair one of the most beloved franchises in history with a world-class film-making team, including the brilliant director Denis Villeneuve, extraordinary producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, executive producer Tanya Lapointe and screenwriter Steven Knight, you’re setting the stage for something that’s truly worthy of the Bond legacy. That film is coming, and when the time is right, we’ll have much more to share.”

Who’s Actually in the Running?

In the six years since Daniel Craig’s farewell in No Time to Die, the internet has never really stopped casting the next Bond. But with auditions now officially underway, the speculation has a new urgency to it.

Jacob Elordi — Oscar-nominated, BAFTA-recognized, and currently riding one of the strongest runs of any young actor in Hollywood thanks to Euphoria, Priscilla, and Frankenstein — has emerged as the name generating the most serious buzz. Callum Turner, best known for Masters of the Air and the Fantastic Beasts films, has been a consistent frontrunner, and the fact that he was recently photographed vacationing at Oracabessa Bay — the former Jamaican estate of Bond creator Ian Fleming — did nothing to quiet the rumors. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, once considered the leading candidate, has seen his odds cool somewhat, though he remains in the conversation. Tom Holland and Harris Dickinson have also had their names floated.

The newest name drawing attention is 22-year-old Louis Partridge, whose youth aligns with the studio’s apparent desire for a significantly younger Bond than Craig, who was in his early 50s during No Time to Die. Partridge, who appears in the Enola Holmes films and the upcoming Netflix Pride and Prejudice, has been described as a genuine contender.

And then there’s the wildcard Gold herself might bring. Historically, Bond screen tests have been intense affairs — Craig, Brosnan, and others all performed scenes from classic Bond films in front of a camera. Even actors who didn’t get the role have been immortalized in these tests — footage of Henry Cavill doing his best Bond has become something of a cult artifact. With Gold’s eye for talent that hasn’t fully arrived yet, the next 007 could just as easily be someone whose name hasn’t entered the conversation at all.

Daisy Ridley was nobody’s frontrunner when Gold cast her as Rey. That’s kind of the whole point.

Will Smith is heading back to work — and this time, he’s going straight to your couch. The actor has closed a deal to star in Supermax, a new action thriller directed by David Gordon Green, with Amazon MGM Studios swooping in to acquire worldwide rights in a deal reportedly worth around $70 million. No theatrical run planned. This one is going straight to streaming.

The film centers on two FBI agents investigating a murder that takes place inside the world’s most secure prison. Smith will play one of the agents, with his partner written as a female character — casting for that role is currently underway. Production is set to kick off in mid-August.

It’s a notable move for Smith, whose last big screen appearance was Bad Boys: Ride or Die — a film that proved, emphatically, that audiences still show up for him. That 2024 sequel pulled in over $400 million worldwide on a $100 million budget, coming just two years after the Oscars slap incident that dominated headlines. Amazon will have clocked those numbers carefully. Deadline, which broke the story exclusively, noted that the studio’s acquisition is as much a vote of confidence in Smith himself as it is in the project.

The script comes from David Weil and David J. Rosen, the duo behind the Prime Video conspiracy thriller series Hunters — the Logan Lerman and Al Pacino-led drama — as well as the sci-fi series Invasion. Both writers will also executive produce. Producers include The Picture Company’s Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman, with Smith and Adam Fishbach producing through Smith’s company Westbrook. Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman, President of Film Alexandra Loewy, COO Thom Zadra, and SVP Spencer Ela round out the executive producer roster. CAA Media Finance brokered the deal.

A Reunion — And a Career High — for David Gordon Green

For Green, Supermax represents his biggest budget film to date. The director has built serious genre credibility over the past several years, helming multiple entries in the relaunched Halloween franchise and The Exorcist: Believer, and most recently directing five episodes of the new Prime Video series Scarpetta, starring Nicole Kidman. So this is something of a reunion with Amazon — and a significant step up in scale.

There’s also an interesting creative thread connecting several pieces of this project. Green previously collaborated with co-writer Rosen on Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, an Apple TV series that Green directed and executive produced. Meanwhile, Weil is currently writing the Evan Gershkovich film for director Edward Berger, and is also penning the script for Extraction 3, the Chris Hemsworth-starring Netflix action franchise. The Picture Company, producing Supermax, is simultaneously in production on Weil’s feature directorial debut — the Amazon MGM thriller Tyrant, starring Charlize Theron, Julia Garner, and Demi Moore.

Amazon moved fast to lock this one down. There was reportedly a real possibility that Supermax would surface at the Cannes market — but the studio closed the deal ahead of time specifically to prevent that from happening.

What’s Next for Will Smith

Supermax is the first of several Smith projects expected to move forward, and it’s the one with the clearest runway right now. Two other films are in development at Paramount, which holds a first-look, multi-picture deal with Smith and Westbrook: Sugar Bandits, based on Chuck Hogan’s novel Devils in Exile, following a former Special Forces soldier running a vigilante squad targeting the drug trade in Boston; and Rabbit Hole, penned by Dune screenwriter Jon Spaihts, with plot details still under wraps.

No release date has been set for Supermax yet, but with cameras rolling in August, it won’t be long before we get our first look at Smith back in FBI mode — just on a much smaller screen than we’re used to.

David Gordon Green, known for the rebooted Halloween franchise, is directing

The film will stream exclusively on Prime Video — no theatrical release planned

Production is set to begin mid-August, with additional casting still underway

Will Smith is heading back to action territory in a big way. The Oscar-winning actor has signed on to star in Supermax, an original prison action thriller that Amazon MGM Studios acquired in a deal worth around $70 million — and the studio moved fast enough to cut off any chance of the project hitting the Cannes market first.

Smith will play Rex, one of two FBI agents called in to investigate a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. Deadline, which broke the story, describes it as a “propulsive and twist-laden action thriller” — and the setup already sounds like exactly the kind of high-concept, star-driven vehicle that made Smith one of Hollywood’s biggest draws in the first place. His FBI partner is written as a female part, and casting for that role is currently underway.

Directing is David Gordon Green, who spent the better part of the last decade in the horror space — he helmed three entries in the rebooted Halloween franchise and 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer before recently pivoting to Amazon’s TV thriller Scarpetta. Supermax will be the biggest-budget film of his career to date, a genuine step up in scale for a filmmaker who’s proven he can handle genre pressure.

The screenplay comes from David Weil and David J. Rosen, the writing team behind the TV series Hunters and Invasion. The two will also executive produce, and there’s some notable connective tissue running through this whole project: Weil and Green previously worked together on Apple TV+’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which Green directed and executive produced. Weil is also currently writing the Evan Gershkovich film for director Edward Berger and is attached to Extraction 3 for Netflix. Meanwhile, The Picture Company — whose partners Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona are producing Supermax — is already in production on Weil’s feature directorial debut, the Amazon MGM thriller Tyrant, starring Charlize Theron, Julia Garner, and Demi Moore.

Smith is producing through his Westbrook banner alongside Adam Fishbach. Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman, President of Film Alexandra Loewy, COO Thom Zadra, and SVP Spencer Ela round out the executive producer list. CAA Media Finance brokered the deal.

Smith’s Comeback, Now with Real Momentum

For Smith, this is more than just another movie announcement. It’s a signal that Hollywood’s confidence in him is solidifying. Bad Boys: Ride or Die, his first major project following the 2022 Oscars slap incident, quietly became a genuine success story — grossing over $400 million worldwide. Amazon clearly took notice. Deadline notes the studio’s acquisition is as much a vote of confidence in Smith personally as it is in the project itself.

Supermax also marks his first non-franchise studio film in years, which feels like a meaningful gear shift. He’s not leaning on an existing IP here — he’s carrying an original story on name and performance alone.

Production kicks off in mid-August, with the finished film heading straight to Prime Video. No release date has been set yet, but with a $70 million deal, a proven director, and one of the most recognizable movie stars on the planet, Amazon isn’t treating this like a quiet streaming drop.

Amazon MGM Studios confirmed at its Upfront presentation that the live-action Voltron movie will skip theaters entirely

The film will premiere on Prime Video or add-on channel MGM+ in 2027

Henry Cavill stars as King Alfur, with Sterling K. Brown as villain Zarkon and Rita Ora as the witch Haggar

Director Rawson Marshall Thurber built a massive physical rig called the “Lion’s Den” to capture actors’ reactions during robot combat sequences

Fans have reacted with frustration, arguing the film’s scale demands a big-screen experience

The live-action Voltron movie has been a long time coming — over 20 years in development, to be exact — and fans finally have an update. Unfortunately, it’s not the one they were hoping for.

Amazon MGM Studios announced during its Amazon Upfront slate presentation that the highly anticipated Voltron film starring Henry Cavill will bypass theaters entirely and premiere directly on Prime Video, or possibly add-on channel MGM+. The movie is still on track for a 2027 release, but it won’t be roaring into multiplexes anywhere along the way.

The reaction from fans was immediate and, to put it mildly, not great. “Is it that bad that they have to cancel theatrical release? Because a movie like this would have sold tickets,” one fan wrote on Twitter. Another put it more bluntly: “Not every blockbuster needs theaters, but giant robots fighting in space definitely feels like one that does.” Reddit threads in the Voltron community echoed the sentiment, with many fans arguing that a property built around colossal robot lions merging into a towering warrior deserves the biggest screen possible.

Not everyone was devastated, though. “Love the hell out of this,” one viewer responded. “Going to theaters is in the past for me.” But that camp appears to be in the minority when it comes to the core fanbase.

A Dream Project With a Blockbuster Cast

What makes the news sting a little more is just how much ambition has clearly gone into this production. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber — the filmmaker behind Red Notice, Central Intelligence, and Dodgeball — Voltron was co-written by Thurber and Ellen Shanman. Thurber has described himself as a longtime fan of the original cartoon, and his commitment to the source material has been evident from the start.

The production team actually constructed a massive physical rig called the “Lion’s Den” to throw actors around and capture genuine physical reactions during robot combat sequences — a deliberate move to reduce heavy CGI reliance and ground the action in something tactile and real. That kind of practical ambition is exactly what you’d expect from a film designed to dazzle on an IMAX screen.

The cast matches that scale. Henry Cavill — currently riding high with his new Guy Ritchie action film In The Grey and deep into production on the long-awaited Highlander remake — will reportedly play King Alfur, a legendary warrior and former ruler of the planet Altea. Sterling K. Brown takes on Zarkon, the film’s primary villain and Alfur’s nemesis. Rita Ora plays the witch Haggar. Rounding out the ensemble are Alba Baptista, John Harlan Kim, Samson Kayo, Tharanya Tharan, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Laura Gordon, Tim Griffin, and Nathan Jones.

Quinn-Toye is a notable newcomer to keep an eye on — he previously served as Tom Holland’s understudy in the West End production of Romeo and Juliet.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but Thurber offered fans a glimpse of his vision when he addressed the crowd at VoltCon in Indianapolis via video back in 2024. “I want to make sure that we stay true to the heart and the spirit of Voltron,” he said. “In this film, we’re going to be introducing an entirely new generation of pilots. We’ve reimagined Voltron for the live-action world, but we’re going to stay true to…those iconic elements that you love, that I love.”

Twenty Years in the Making

The road to getting Voltron to any screen has been extraordinarily long. The project was first announced in 2005 by The Mark Gordon Company, then spent years bouncing between studios including New Regency and Universal Pictures before Amazon MGM Studios entered negotiations with Hasbro for the rights in 2022 — rights that were officially granted in early 2026. Filming wrapped last summer.

The source material has its own layered history. The original Voltron: Defender of the Universe was born in 1984 when World Events Productions took the Japanese animated series Beast King GoLion (and later Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV), dubbed it with American voice actors, and unleashed it on American kids. The show ran for 124 episodes and became a defining piece of ’80s pop culture — five young pilots commanding giant robotic lions that could merge into the massive warrior robot Voltron to battle the evil Zarkon and his army of monsters called Robeasts.

The franchise never really went away. There were revivals in the ’90s, and most recently Voltron: Legendary Defender, which ran for eight seasons on Netflix starting in 2016 and earned a strong following of its own. The live-action film was announced in 2022, with producers Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman, and Bob Koplar — head of World Events Productions and owner of the Voltron IP — attached.

Why This Decision Raises Questions

The straight-to-streaming call is a curious one from a business standpoint. A film with a recognizable IP, a marquee star in Cavill, a blockbuster-level supporting cast, and clearly significant production investment would seem like a natural theatrical bet — if nothing else, to recoup some of its budget at the box office before landing on streaming. Amazon has been willing to send other big swings to theaters, which makes the Voltron decision feel like a signal worth paying attention to.

Whether that signal is about the film’s quality, Amazon’s evolving strategy for its streaming platform, or simply a scheduling calculation, nobody outside the studio is saying. What’s undeniable is that fans who have waited decades for this movie — and who grew up watching those lions lock into place on Saturday morning TV — feel like they’re being denied something.

As one fan put it on Reddit: the small screen just isn’t right for this epic clash.

Amazon also revealed the film’s official logo alongside the announcement. For now, 2027 is the target, and Prime Video is where the lions will land.

Project Hail Mary is now available to rent ($19.99) or buy ($24.99) on Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and other digital platforms

The Ryan Gosling sci-fi epic has grossed $656 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 2026

Amazon MGM extended the theatrical window beyond its usual 45-day window, with the film hitting digital 53 days after its March 20 release

A free streaming release on Prime Video or MGM+ has not yet been announced, but could arrive as early as mid-June

Physical media — 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD — is set for August 11, 2026

After nearly two months of dominating the box office and sending audiences back to theaters for second, third, and — for some very dedicated fans — fifth viewings, Project Hail Mary is officially available to watch at home. Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi blockbuster landed on digital platforms on May 12, 2026, and you can rent or buy it on Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, YouTube Movies & TV, and Google Play right now.

The rental will run you $19.99 — giving you 30 days to start watching and 48 hours to finish once you press play — while a permanent digital purchase is $24.99. The film is also available in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR and Atmos, so if you’ve got the setup for it, this is going to look and sound spectacular on your couch.

What Project Hail Mary Is Actually About

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard, the film is based on the bestselling 2021 novel by Andy Weir — the same author behind The Martian. Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up aboard a spacecraft called the Hail Mary with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As his memories slowly return through flashbacks, he realizes he’s the sole survivor of a crew on a suicide mission: figure out why a mysterious microorganism called astrophage is eating the sun’s energy before it kills every living thing on Earth.

He doesn’t have to do it alone. Along the way, Grace encounters Rocky — a spider-shaped alien made of rocks, voiced by James Ortiz — whose own planet is facing the same extinction-level threat. What follows is, depending on who you ask, one of the most purely joyful sci-fi films in years.

Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, and Liz Kingsman also star.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 94% critics score and a 95% audience score. The San Francisco Chronicle’s G. Allen Johnson called it “a masterpiece of a family popcorn movie, with eye-popping hand-crafted production design and outstanding creature design and puppetry work.” IGN’s Tom Jorgenson gave it 8/10, describing it as “a memorable celebration of how much we can accomplish when we work together.”

The Box Office Story Behind the Digital Release

This is Amazon MGM Studios’ biggest movie ever — full stop. Project Hail Mary has earned $656 million worldwide, split almost perfectly down the middle between domestic ($327.7 million) and international ($328 million) markets, per Box Office Mojo. It’s the second-highest-grossing film of 2026, sitting behind only The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie. Against a net production budget of $200 million — before marketing — the film needed to clear $500 million to break even, according to Variety. It blew past that.

The film’s journey to your living room wasn’t entirely straightforward. In mid-April, Amazon MGM announced it was actually delaying the digital release to extend the theatrical run — an unusual move that included a one-week return to IMAX theaters. Co-director Christopher Miller was direct about the reasoning. “We announced yesterday that MGM is extending the exclusive theatrical window for Project Hail Mary, so it won’t be on streaming anytime soon,” he wrote on X. “This is a movie that needs to be seen on a big screen…make plans to see it in a theater now! Bring friends and loved ones. It’s an experience to share with others.”

That theatrical window ultimately stretched to 53 days — longer than Amazon MGM’s typical 45-day standard for bigger releases. The PVOD rollout itself is also a departure from the studio’s usual playbook, which tends to skip the rental/purchase window entirely and send films straight to Prime Video.

When Will It Hit Prime Video for Free?

No official streaming date has been announced yet. But based on how Amazon MGM has handled other titles, the expectation is that Project Hail Mary will land on Prime Video — or possibly MGM+ first — sometime in the weeks ahead. Previous Amazon MGM films like Challengers and Blink Twice debuted on MGM+ before expanding to Prime Video. Given the scale of this film’s success, though, it seems unlikely Amazon would bury its biggest movie ever on a niche subscription service. One informed prediction puts the Prime Video arrival around June 12, 2026 — though that’s speculative until the studio makes it official.

If you’re a new subscriber, both Prime Video and MGM+ currently offer free trials: 30 days for Amazon Prime, and seven days for MGM+ (which runs $7.99/month or $5.17/month annually after that).

What About Blu-ray and DVD?

Physical media fans, your date is August 11, 2026 — that’s when 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD copies are expected to arrive, per Blu-ray.com. A preorder isn’t live yet, but it’s worth keeping an eye on. For those who prefer to own their movies in a format that can’t be revoked, it’s worth the wait.

In the meantime, the Project Hail Mary universe keeps expanding beyond the screen — there’s already a LEGO set based on the Hail Mary ship, a Rocky plush, and a VR game on the way. There are even early whispers about franchise potential, though nothing is confirmed.

Rocky, meanwhile, is waiting for you on your couch. Jazz hands and all.

Prime Video has officially ordered a series adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling romantasy novel Fourth Wing

Michael B. Jordan announced the pickup at Amazon’s Upfront presentation at the Beacon Theatre on May 11

Lisa Joy (Westworld) will direct the pilot; Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House) is showrunner

No cast has been announced yet; the show will stream in over 240 countries and territories worldwide

The dragons are finally coming to Prime Video. After more than two years in development, the streaming giant has officially ordered a series adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing — the romantasy phenomenon that took over BookTok, broke sales records, and turned millions of readers into obsessives practically overnight.

Executive producer Michael B. Jordan made the announcement Monday night at Amazon’s Upfront presentation at the Beacon Theatre in New York, closing out the evening alongside fellow EP and pilot director Lisa Joy, showrunner Meredith Averill, and Yarros herself. The moment felt fitting — this is a book series with a fanbase that doesn’t just read the books, they live in them, and the people behind the adaptation clearly know that.

The Team Behind the Adaptation

The creative lineup here is serious. Meredith Averill, who co-created Netflix’s Locke & Key and worked on The Haunting of Hill House, is running the show as showrunner and executive producer. Lisa Joy — the Westworld co-creator who also helmed Prime Video’s Fallout adaptation — will direct the first episode and serve as EP through her production company Kilter Films, which she co-founded with Jonathan Nolan. Nolan and Kilter’s Athena Wickham are also on board as executive producers.

Jordan is producing through his Outlier Society banner, which has an overall TV deal with Amazon MGM Studios. Elizabeth Raposo, Outlier’s president, is an EP alongside Jordan. Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark are producing for Premeditated — the sister company to Fourth Wing publisher Entangled Publishing, which gives the project a direct line to the source. Outlier Society EVP of television Stefano Agosto rounds out the team as co-executive producer.

“This project required the right creative partner,” Jordan said on stage before introducing Joy.

Averill, for her part, clearly gets what makes this series tick. “Rebecca’s books have become one of the fastest selling franchises of the 21st century, with a fandom so passionate, so devoted, they don’t just read these books, they live in them,” she said. “The emotional stakes are sky high, the battles are epic, power dynamics are thrilling, and underneath it is so much humor and heart and a romance that will consume you.”

Yarros gave the whole team her blessing — and it sounds like she means it. “These are the people who understand what a story means to its readers, and they’re passionate about the book, which is why I trust them completely,” she said. She also added in a statement: “I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them.”

What the Show Is About — and How Far It Could Go

For anyone who somehow missed the BookTok frenzy: Fourth Wing centers on twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who had plans for a quiet life as a Scribe until her mother — a military general — orders her into the brutal world of Basgiath War College. There’s only one rule there: graduate or die. Violet joins hundreds of candidates competing to become dragon riders, the elite of the kingdom of Navarre. Romance, danger, power dynamics, and a lot of dragons follow.

The first book hit shelves in May 2023 and became an instant New York Times bestseller. The sequel, Iron Flame, followed in November 2023, and the third installment, Onyx Storm, arrived in January 2025. Yarros has planned five books total — meaning, if the show succeeds, there’s material for multiple seasons already mapped out. The fourth and fifth titles haven’t been announced yet.

The series will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide — a massive global footprint for a story with an already massive global fanbase. Amazon MGM Studios head of global television Peter Friedlander called it “one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world.”

“Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes,” Friedlander said. “We’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.”

The Long Road to a Series Order

Amazon MGM acquired the rights to the book series in a competitive auction right around the time the first novel published in 2023 — the buzz was already that loud. But the road from rights acquisition to actual series order has taken over two years and had its share of bumps.

Moira Walley-Beckett — the Breaking Bad writer and creator of Anne With an E — was originally brought on as showrunner in the summer of 2024, but she exited the project. Averill stepped in as showrunner in September 2025, and the project gained real momentum from there. Monday’s series order is the payoff fans have been waiting for.

No casting has been announced yet — meaning Violet Sorrengail, Xaden Riorson, Rhiannon Matthias, Liam Mairi, and Dain Aetos are all still up for grabs. Production and premiere dates haven’t been set either. But with this team locked in and the order officially made, the search for Violet is almost certainly underway.

Fourth Wing was one of three projects Jordan presented at the Amazon Upfront under Outlier Society’s deal with the studio. He also unveiled a first look at The Greatest, an authorized Muhammad Ali limited series, and Delphi, the first TV series set in the Creed film universe, which begins production in Los Angeles on May 18.

But it was Fourth Wing that closed the night — and for the millions of readers who’ve been waiting, it was worth the wait just to hear it made official.
