Will Smith is heading back to action territory in a big way. The Oscar-winning actor has signed on to star in Supermax, an original prison action thriller that Amazon MGM Studios acquired in a deal worth around $70 million — and the studio moved fast enough to cut off any chance of the project hitting the Cannes market first.
Smith will play Rex, one of two FBI agents called in to investigate a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. Deadline, which broke the story, describes it as a “propulsive and twist-laden action thriller” — and the setup already sounds like exactly the kind of high-concept, star-driven vehicle that made Smith one of Hollywood’s biggest draws in the first place. His FBI partner is written as a female part, and casting for that role is currently underway.
Directing is David Gordon Green, who spent the better part of the last decade in the horror space — he helmed three entries in the rebooted Halloween franchise and 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer before recently pivoting to Amazon’s TV thriller Scarpetta. Supermax will be the biggest-budget film of his career to date, a genuine step up in scale for a filmmaker who’s proven he can handle genre pressure.
The screenplay comes from David Weil and David J. Rosen, the writing team behind the TV series Hunters and Invasion. The two will also executive produce, and there’s some notable connective tissue running through this whole project: Weil and Green previously worked together on Apple TV+’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which Green directed and executive produced. Weil is also currently writing the Evan Gershkovich film for director Edward Berger and is attached to Extraction 3 for Netflix. Meanwhile, The Picture Company — whose partners Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona are producing Supermax — is already in production on Weil’s feature directorial debut, the Amazon MGM thriller Tyrant, starring Charlize Theron, Julia Garner, and Demi Moore.
Smith is producing through his Westbrook banner alongside Adam Fishbach. Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman, President of Film Alexandra Loewy, COO Thom Zadra, and SVP Spencer Ela round out the executive producer list. CAA Media Finance brokered the deal.
Smith’s Comeback, Now with Real Momentum
For Smith, this is more than just another movie announcement. It’s a signal that Hollywood’s confidence in him is solidifying. Bad Boys: Ride or Die, his first major project following the 2022 Oscars slap incident, quietly became a genuine success story — grossing over $400 million worldwide. Amazon clearly took notice. Deadline notes the studio’s acquisition is as much a vote of confidence in Smith personally as it is in the project itself.
Supermax also marks his first non-franchise studio film in years, which feels like a meaningful gear shift. He’s not leaning on an existing IP here — he’s carrying an original story on name and performance alone.
Production kicks off in mid-August, with the finished film heading straight to Prime Video. No release date has been set yet, but with a $70 million deal, a proven director, and one of the most recognizable movie stars on the planet, Amazon isn’t treating this like a quiet streaming drop.
