According to an insider, the decision came after some candid conversations with her sons — Sean Preston, now 20, and Jayden, 19, both of whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline. “Britney went to rehab after several conversations with both of her sons,” the source told Us. “They expressed concern about her recent behavior and urged her to seek professional help, which has been long overdue, to get her back on track. All they’ve ever wanted for their mom is health and happiness, even during the years they were estranged.”

She left the facility at the end of April, the same day she was formally charged with one misdemeanor count of DUI. By May 4, she had reached a deal.

At a hearing at Ventura County courthouse — which Britney did not attend in person — Commissioner Matthew Nemerson sentenced her to 12 months’ probation and one day in jail, with credit given for time already served. She was also fined $571, required to complete a DUI class, and ordered to see a psychologist once a week and a psychiatrist twice a month. The original DUI charge was dismissed.

She qualified for the reduced “wet reckless” plea — reckless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs — because she had no prior DUI history, her blood alcohol level was low, and there was no crash or injury involved. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office noted the resolution is “common, particularly when a defendant demonstrates self-motivation to address underlying issues through rehabilitation or a drug and alcohol treatment program.”

Her attorney, Michael Goldstein, spoke plainly after the hearing. “Through her plea today, Britney has accepted responsibility for her conduct. She has taken significant steps to implement positive change, which is clearly reflected in the Ventura County District Attorney’s decision to reduce the charge in this case and dismiss the DUI. Britney appreciates this discretion and is also grateful for the outpouring of support she has received.”
