Lil Rel Howery has something to say — and he said it directly, clearly, and without apology.

“The audience was OK boo’ing Draymond Green every time his name was mentioned. Y’all could boo! I 100 percent would have booed that muthaf-ka and probably walked out. That’s all I’m saying, y’all.”

He acknowledged that people can be overly sensitive sometimes — but drew a hard line here. “Why can’t we just agree that bringing up George Floyd in the way he did it was f-cked up and not funny and not needed? It wasn’t even needed! I ain’t like that sh-t.”

The backlash didn’t stop with Howery. Travis Cains, a spokesman for The Gianna and George Floyd Foundation, told TMZ that Hart condoning the joke was “sad for the culture” — and that Floyd’s family and friends are flat-out appalled that Hinchcliffe was invited back to another Netflix roast at all.

He credited Bianca Censori — the same woman sitting beside him at the Hart roast — as the reason he finally sought help. “When you go into a manic episode, you are ill at that point,” he wrote. “When you are not in an episode, you are completely ‘normal.’ And that’s when the wreckage from the illness hits the hardest.”

The Saturday Night Live star was originally booked to perform at Netflix’s Roast of Kevin Hart, which streamed live on May 6 from the Kia Forum in Los Angeles — but he pulled out before the show due to scheduling conflicts with SNL, according to two sources involved in the production. He wasn’t alone, either. The lineup apparently went through significant reshuffling in the lead-up, with several last-minute additions and dropouts along the way.

But Che didn’t just quietly bow out. Days after the special aired, he took to Instagram to make his feelings about the show very clear.

“White guys and Black people joke different,” he wrote. “Black guy roast like, ‘look at this n– – shoes!’ White roasts are like, ‘Slavery, math, slain teens, sex crimes, slurs, family secrets.’ White guys don’t give a fuck about they shoes.”

It didn’t take much reading between the lines to figure out what he was referring to. Host Shane Gillis made jokes about Hart’s height that invoked slavery and lynching — the lynching quip, Gillis admitted, required “three weeks of deliberation.” Tony Hinchcliffe went further, delivering a George Floyd joke that drew immediate backlash online. Jeff Ross, Dwayne Johnson, Gillis, and others mocked Hart’s late father’s addiction to crack cocaine. Pete Davidson and Hinchcliffe both landed jokes that referenced — without saying — the N-word. And multiple comics, including Katt Williams, cracked jokes about Hart once attending a Diddy party.

“Nothing was off limits,” Ross told Variety the day after the live telecast.

Che’s Real Target: The Writers Room

The Instagram posts didn’t stop at the jokes themselves. In a second slide, Che went after the people writing them.

“Let’s do a roast celebrating the career of the most successful Black comic in the last 10 years,” he wrote. “I love that! Who should we get to write it?” The next image: a photo of five joke writers hired by Gillis — Nick Mullen, J.P. McDade, Mike Lawrence, Dan St. Germain, and Zac Amico. All five are white.

“C’monnnnnnnnn… that’s not funny?” Che added.

McDade seemed to take it in stride, resharing Che’s post — but only the photo, not the caption. “Don’t swipe,” he wrote.

It’s worth putting Che’s call-out in context, though. The full roast had 17 credited writers, and several of them are Black. The five men Che highlighted were specifically part of Gillis’s personal writing team, not the entire production. Comedian Madison Sinclair, who performed in the special, shared some of her favorite unused roast jokes after the fact.

That joke made it into the live broadcast but was quietly removed from the version now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix’s Roast of Kevin Hart was three hours of glorious, uncensored chaos — but the version that aired on Sunday night wasn’t even the sharpest cut. Comedy writer Madison Sinclair, who worked behind the scenes crafting material for several of the night’s roasters, has since revealed a batch of jokes that never made it to air, including one that took a pointed swipe at First Lady Melania Trump.

The line was written for Tony Hinchcliffe — the comedian perhaps best known for calling Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” at a Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in 2024 — and it read: “Tony is like Melania: The only thing relevant about him is that he opened for Trump once.” Clean, surgical, and apparently too hot for Netflix. Sinclair shared the joke with Variety, though no explanation was given for why it didn’t make the final cut.

It’s not hard to guess why someone might have gotten cold feet. The political climate around jokes involving the first family has turned genuinely treacherous. Just weeks earlier, Jimmy Kimmel’s quip that Melania had “the glow of an expectant widow” — a reference, many assumed, to the president’s age — prompted Mrs. Trump to accuse him of “hateful and violent rhetoric” and demand ABC News take action against him. On Lizzo’s acting debut in Hustlers: “Lizzo broke barriers when she danced as a stripper in Hustlers, mostly because they weren’t properly enforced.”

On Shane Gillis and his military record: “Shane Gillis only lasted two weeks in basic training. The closest he’s come to becoming a veteran is his views on Asians.”

And a deadpan Chelsea Handler burn that was really a two-for-one: “You might know Chelsea from being on E! for over a decade… she also had a famous talk show for a while.”

Sinclair, who has also written for The Roast of Alec Baldwin and the OnlyFans roasts of Whitney Cummings, told Playboy that she’s never interested in writing a roast where she’s comfortable with every joke she hears. “That’s kind of the fun of them,” she said. Her philosophy: if you’re going to go after a sensitive topic, the punchline better be worth it. “If you’re going to make fun of a sensitive topic, you better have a really smart joke about it. And the punchline isn’t just that — you’re saying a slur.”

Pete Davidson’s Most Controversial Night

The jokes that did make air weren’t exactly tame. Pete Davidson had arguably the most combustible set of the evening, targeting Hinchcliffe with a line that’s still generating outrage: “Tony reminds me of Charlie Kirk, in that he’s definitely been on camera letting a guy unload in his throat.”

He understands the pain of growing up without a dad, but he’s joking about a man whose children will now grow up without theirs.”

Blake Neff, a producer of The Charlie Kirk Show, addressed it on X: “I didn’t like it, and I’m glad the audience wasn’t into it, but there are other ‘jokes’ we’ve seen that are clearly a lot more hateful in intent than Pete’s, and a few bad-taste jokes about Charlie are the price we have to pay for how iconic he has become in American culture.” Turning Point USA did not comment. What starts as market research — genuinely, his character frames this as professional fieldwork — becomes something far more chaotic and personal when a controlled experiment meets people who have absolutely no interest in being anyone’s focus group.

A Cast Built for This Kind of Comedy

Hart is joined by Hernández, Mason Gooding, Ben Marshall and Kam Patterson as the core bachelor party crew, and the combination is sharper than it might sound on paper. Hernández has built real comedic credibility through his work on Saturday Night Live — he’s also appearing in the upcoming Happy Gilmore 2 — and his deadpan energy plays beautifully against Hart’s more reactive, high-energy style. Davidson, 32, was that comedian. While taking aim at fellow roaster Tony Hinchcliffe — the Kill Tony host who made headlines last fall for cracking offensive jokes about Puerto Rico at a Donald Trump rally — Davidson delivered what became the night’s most talked-about line.

“Tony, nothing you say tonight will hurt my feelings,” Davidson said. “I was in a beef with Kanye, so I’ve taken shots from better gay Nazis.”

It started back in 2014 with passive-aggressive jabs about Hollywood sellouts, escalated through Williams calling Hart a “Hollywood puppet” on his 2016 Conspiracy Theory tour, blew up again in 2018 when Williams dragged Tiffany Haddish into it, and hit a fever pitch in 2024 when Williams went on Club Shay Shay with Shannon Sharpe and alleged Hart had been an industry plant from day one — that he arrived in Hollywood already holding deals, with a sitcom and a movie before anyone had ever seen him sell out a comedy club. Hart’s response at the time was a quiet tweet: “Gotta get that anger up outcha champ… It’s honestly sad.” Two years later, they’re hugging on live television.

Pete Davidson Brings Kanye Into It

Williams wasn’t the only one making headlines. Pete Davidson, 32, took the stage and immediately made clear he wasn’t there to play nice — with anyone.

When Tony Hinchcliffe’s name came up, Davidson delivered what might have been the night’s sharpest one-liner: “Tony, nothing you say tonight will hurt my feelings. I was in a beef with Kanye, so I’ve taken shots from better gay Nazis.”

Hinchcliffe had already set up the exchange by going after Davidson first, joking: “The closest Pete has come to greatness is when his d*** rubbed up against Kanye’s old c**.” Davidson, for his part, was seen nodding along from the dais.

The Davidson-West history runs deep. During Davidson’s nine-month relationship with Kim Kardashian — from November 2021 through August 2022 — West publicly tormented him on social media, famously dubbing him “Skete” and posting videos depicting violence against him. Earlier this year, West published an open letter in the Wall Street Journal acknowledging his behavior and attributing it to a four-month manic episode. “I regret and am deeply mortified by my actions in that state,” West wrote. “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.” West had no public response to his name being invoked Sunday night.

The Full Night at the Kia Forum

The roast was the closing event of the 2026 Netflix Is A Joke Fest, hosted by Shane Gillis and broadcast live from Los Angeles. The roasting panel included Chelsea Handler, Draymond Green, Hinchcliffe, Regina Hall, Sheryl Underwood, Jeff Ross, Big Jay Oakerson, and Na’im Lynn. Special guests included Tom Brady — who opened the show and came out swinging, calling himself a much bigger star than Hart and taking a shot at Cowboys fans — along with Usher, Lizzo, Venus and Serena Williams, Teyana Taylor, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

One quieter but genuinely moving moment came from Jeff Ross, the self-styled Roastmaster General, who revealed that Hart had encouraged him to see a doctor — a visit that led to the discovery of colon cancer. Ross said he’s doing better now.

Hart’s wife Eniko was in the front row for all of it. It was Mother’s Day.

By the end of the night, Hart had rattled off a list of sponsors long enough to fill half the runtime, thrown some haymakers of his own, and closed out what turned into something more than a roast. The Katt Williams moment will be the one people are still talking about — not just because of the Diddy joke, but because of what came after it. Two guys who spent years taking shots at each other, finally done.
