IO Interactive has confirmed that 007 First Light has officially gone gold — meaning the game is finished, the discs are being pressed, and the May 27 release date is locked in. The announcement came via social media, where the developer simply said: “007 First Light has gone gold! See you on May 27th for this re-imagined origin story.”

It’s a milestone fans have been quietly waiting on, especially after some raised eyebrows when IO was still releasing new console gameplay footage just days before the gold announcement. Two weeks out from launch is actually pretty standard for the industry, though — going gold simply means the master build has been approved and submitted for physical disc production. Day-one patches are still fair game, and IO will almost certainly continue fixing bugs and tidying things up right up until the servers go live.

For context on why this moment matters beyond the technical: this is the first proper James Bond console game since 007 Legends back in 2012. That’s 14 years. Bond has been largely absent from gaming, and IO Interactive — the studio behind the rebooted Hitman trilogy — has spent years building this one. It was already delayed once, pushed from an original March 2026 window to the current May date, which makes finally hitting gold feel like a genuine exhale.

What Kind of Game Is This, Exactly?

007 First Light is a third-person action-adventure that tells an original origin story for James Bond — one that draws from Ian Fleming’s novels and short stories rather than the films. Players step into the shoes of a 26-year-old Bond, a sharp-instinct Royal Navy air crewman who gets recruited into MI6 and fights his way through the agency’s elite 00 training program. The whole point is to show who Bond was before the tuxedos and the martinis.

Patrick Gibson plays that young Bond, and his co-star Lennie James has already gone on record saying Gibson deserves serious consideration for the next Bond film. High praise. Familiar faces like M, Q, and Miss Moneypenny are along for the ride, alongside new characters including Bond’s mentor John Greenway and a mysterious figure named Isola.

The gameplay blends IO’s signature stealth and action DNA — the same DNA that made Hitman so replayable — with a more linear, story-driven structure. Stealth, gadgets from Q Branch, hand-to-hand combat, and Bond’s instinct are all in the toolkit. Set-pieces include high-speed chases, shootouts, and at least one sequence where Bond gets thrown out of a hacked airplane without a parachute. Classic Bond energy.

Game Rant’s editor-in-chief Anthony Taormina got three hours with it ahead of launch and came away optimistic: “I can’t speak to the full game, but what I played had so much variety both in terms of what you are doing moment-to-moment and in how you can approach a given challenge. If First Light is the beginning of the next era of 007 video games, then the James Bond franchise is in great hands.”

Expect a playthrough of around 20 hours, depending on your style.

The Pre-Order Deal, the Editions, and the Lana Del Rey Theme

Anyone who pre-orders any edition of 007 First Light gets a free upgrade to the Deluxe Edition — no extra charge. That includes four exclusive outfits (Day of the Dead, Desert Explorer, Silent Anchor, and Gentleman Operator), the Gleaming Pack gadget skins, an exclusive weapon skin, and 24-hour early access before the May 27 launch.

If you want to go all-in, there’s also a Legacy Edition priced at $299.99 that includes the full game, all Deluxe content, an exclusive Golden Gun weapon skin, the Obsidian Gold Suit, a physical Golden Gun figurine with a secret compartment, a certificate of authenticity, and a steel case. There’s also a Specialist Edition exclusive to Amazon that comes with unique packaging and the Classic Tux outfit.

The game’s theme song is performed by Lana Del Rey — which, honestly, fits perfectly for a Bond origin story with this tone.

One note for Nintendo Switch 2 fans: your version was confirmed delayed last month and is now expected to arrive later in Summer 2026. IO has committed to releasing it, so it’s coming — just not on day one.

007 First Light launches May 27, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. After more than a decade without a Bond game worth talking about, the wait is almost over.
