Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce’s Prenup May Hinge on Which State They Choose
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s prenup could come down to location — here’s why the state they choose matters more than you’d think.

- Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are expected to sign a prenup ahead of their reported July 3 wedding — and the state where it’s drafted matters enormously.
- Swift is worth an estimated $2 billion; Kelce comes in at $90 million, making a prenup essentially standard practice for the couple.
- Rhode Island and Kansas are considered the strongest options, while New York — despite being a favorite haunt — could be the riskiest choice.
- The couple has been spotted on back-to-back NYC date nights, and wedding venue buzz has extended to London’s Chiltern Firehouse.
- Kelce reportedly gifted Swift a $125,000 suite of Elizabeth Taylor’s opal jewelry, which may be inspiring her wedding look.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have a summer wedding on the horizon, and while the world is obsessing over the dress, the flowers, and the guest list, there’s a quieter — but arguably more consequential — decision quietly being made behind the scenes: the prenup, and exactly where it gets signed.
With Swift sitting on an estimated $2 billion fortune and Kelce worth around $90 million, the couple checks every box for a prenup being not just smart, but necessary. Both are still active earners. Both have significant separate assets. And both have lawyers who are almost certainly very, very good at their jobs. But here’s the wrinkle most people don’t think about — the state where a prenup is drafted typically determines which state’s laws govern it, regardless of where the couple ultimately lives. That makes picking a jurisdiction just as strategic as picking a venue.
Which State Makes the Most Sense?
Swift and Kelce have ties to at least six states — Rhode Island, Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee, New York, and the broader New York area — and each comes with its own legal landscape. Sources familiar with the situation say California is already off the table.
Rhode Island may actually be the smartest play for a woman of Swift’s stature. It’s considered the strongest overall fit when you factor in her billionaire-level wealth, its courts’ respect for separate property, and the fact that judges there are less likely to go rogue and rewrite agreements. Swift owns a well-known estate in the state, so there’s a genuine connection beyond legal convenience.
Kansas comes in as a close runner-up. It’s a prenup-friendly state with predictable courts and solid protections for separate property — and it makes geographic sense given that Kelce recently bought a home there and his entire NFL career has been rooted in Kansas City, which straddles the Kansas-Missouri border.
Tennessee lands somewhere in the middle of the pack. It’s generally a favorable state for wealthy entertainers, and Swift’s roots in Nashville run deep. Missouri is considered slightly better than New York but not a frontrunner. And New York? Despite being the city where the couple has been spending so much of their time lately, it’s probably the worst option on the list — New York judges are known for scrutinizing prenups closely and, in some cases, tossing them out entirely.
Of course, as the analysis notes, Swift and Kelce have good enough lawyers to make almost any state work. They could even go the Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez route and skip a prenup entirely — though that arrangement famously didn’t end well for either party.
Date Nights, Chivalry, and a Wedding That’s Coming Fast
While the legal logistics get sorted, the couple has been very publicly enjoying New York in the lead-up to what’s being reported as a July 3 wedding date. Over the weekend of May 16, they hit a private event at Honey’s cocktail bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, arriving by SUV and walking hand-in-hand to the entrance. Kelce — wearing all black — placed a hand gently on Swift’s back as he guided her inside.
Earlier that evening, Swift had been wearing a green metallic spaghetti-strap dress that was doing absolutely nothing against Brooklyn’s 57-degree night air. Kelce’s solution? He gave her his suit jacket and braved the chill in just his t-shirt. Chivalry, apparently, is very much alive in the Kelce household.
The night before, the two had been photographed strolling hand-in-hand through Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood before sitting down for a Mediterranean dinner at Or’esh.
Wedding venue speculation has also gone international. According to The U.S. Sun, Swift and Kelce traveled to London and took meetings at The Chiltern Firehouse, sitting down with owner Andre Balazs to discuss hosting a VIP event for around 120 guests. The venue has been closed to the public following structural damage but remains available for private bookings. “London holds a huge place in Taylor’s heart and she has so many British friends who she wants to celebrate with,” a source told the outlet. The Chiltern Firehouse also carries personal history — the two reportedly partied there after Swift’s Eras Tour dates at Wembley Stadium.
The Elizabeth Taylor Connection
Beyond the legal and logistical planning, there’s a romantic throughline running through the entire engagement period that fans have been piecing together. Over recent weeks, Swift has been photographed wearing multiple opal pieces from the late Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry collection — bracelets, a ring, chandelier earrings — spotted most notably during her New York Times Magazine interview and that Brooklyn dinner appearance.
The full suite originally sold through Christie’s in 2011 for $6,000, then resold by Fox Estate Jewelry on 1stDibs in 2025 for $125,000. Adam Fox, the jewelry dealer behind the sale, noticed something unusual about the transaction almost immediately — the purchase came through a sports agent, out of nowhere, no negotiation, no back-and-forth.
“On the majority of these online platforms, for higher-ticket items, somebody will reach out, ask questions,” Fox told Page Six Style. “Sometimes they will try to negotiate, sometimes they won’t. This just randomly sold.”
He didn’t put it together until he spotted Swift wearing the complete set publicly. “I was like, ah, this makes so much more sense,” Fox said. “It was very cool” seeing the collection end up on “one of the most famous women in the world.” Fox stopped short of confirming Kelce was the buyer, but noted the sports agent connection was the only reason he assumed as much: “I’m just the jewelry dealer. I just had to assume.”
The choice of Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry carries more weight than just price tag. Swift’s album The Life of a Showgirl reportedly includes a song inspired by the Hollywood legend, and another track, “Opalite,” has become closely tied to Kelce — he’s called it his favorite song on the record. Opal is also Kelce’s birthstone. And Swift has had her own emotional connection to the stone for years. “My favorite stone is an opal because when I was bullied in school, my mom used to take me to TJ Maxx after school to look at the opal jewelry,” she told Us Weekly back in 2016. “I thought opals were so beautiful, and somehow it made me feel better. We never bought them, just looked.”
Now she’s wearing $125,000 worth of them. Quite the full-circle moment.
As for the wedding dress itself, a source cited by The Daily Mail claims Swift became so immersed in Elizabeth Taylor’s visual world while filming the music video for her song “Elizabeth Taylor” that she’s now drawing on the actress’s iconic style for her bridal look — potentially nodding to Taylor’s classic 1950 wedding gown. Old Hollywood glamour, an opal-obsessed fiancé, and a prenup that could be filed in Rhode Island. Taylor Swift really does think of everything.
