Benedict Cumberbatch’s Heated Cyclist Clash in London
Benedict Cumberbatch got into a 10-minute roadside showdown with a ‘vigilante’ cyclist near King’s Cross — and schoolkids asked for selfies after.

- Benedict Cumberbatch was caught on camera in a heated argument with a masked cyclist near King’s Cross Station in London.
- The other cyclist accused the actor of riding through a red light; Cumberbatch admitted to doing it “once.”
- The confrontation reportedly lasted around 10 minutes and drew a crowd of stunned commuters and fans.
- Schoolchildren recognized him as Doctor Strange and asked for photos once the dust settled — and he obliged.
- It’s not the first cycling-related incident for Cumberbatch, who was involved in a separate altercation on the Isle of Wight in 2019.
Benedict Cumberbatch had quite the Tuesday evening commute. The 49-year-old Doctor Strange star was filmed getting into a furious, very public argument with a masked cyclist on a central London street near King’s Cross Station — a confrontation that reportedly stretched to a full ten minutes while bystanders, fans, and schoolchildren watched with their jaws on the pavement.
The incident happened at around 5:30pm on Tuesday, May 5, though footage of the altercation only surfaced publicly last Sunday via The Sun. In it, Cumberbatch — riding a cargo bike — is seen squaring off with another cyclist who accused him of blowing through a red light in a cycle lane. According to witnesses, things escalated quickly after Cumberbatch left his bike and walked across the road to confront the other rider directly.
What Was Actually Said
The exchange captured on camera is blunt. The masked cyclist goes straight at him: “You’re deluded, you’re lying. I was behind you the entire time.”
Cumberbatch fires back: “Dude, you verbally abused me.”
The other cyclist isn’t having it, responding with a sarcastic crying gesture before snapping: “Oh no, I verbally abused the guy who completely repeatedly broke the law.”
That’s when Cumberbatch concedes — partially. “I did it once,” he says.
The masked rider pushes further, claiming the Sherlock star also “went through a zebra crossing, you went through three lights.” Cumberbatch flatly denies it. The argument reportedly reignited about five times before the masked man finally left the scene.
Fans, Schoolkids, and Chaos
A witness who filmed the confrontation described the scene to The Sun as something almost surreal. “It was crazy. It was such a pompous road rage it almost felt like it had been staged,” they said. “Benedict still managed to charm everyone watching even though he was having a meltdown.”
The eyewitness also noted the pair completely blocked the lane while going at it on the busy road, with commuters unable to pass. “The masked guy was obviously some kind of vigilante — he was really taken aback when he saw it was Benedict Cumberbatch, but he doubled down on his rage,” the onlooker added.
And then came the kids. A group of schoolchildren watching the row recognized Cumberbatch from his Marvel role and asked, “Is that Dr. Strange?” before requesting a photo. According to the witness, Cumberbatch told them “not at the moment, in a minute” — and then came through. “He was lovely with them,” the eyewitness said. “They were awe-struck.” He also posed for a selfie with at least two adult fans before leaving the scene.
This Isn’t His First Cycling Incident
As it turns out, Cumberbatch has a bit of history when it comes to cycling-related run-ins. Back in 2019, he was involved in a separate incident on the Isle of Wight in Freshwater, where his car reportedly knocked a cyclist off his bike on a country lane. According to reports at the time, the cyclist — not yet realizing who had hit him — slapped Cumberbatch before recognizing the actor. A friend of the rider later claimed Cumberbatch was “lucky” he hadn’t been punched.
Despite the collision, Cumberbatch reportedly offered the injured cyclist water, clothing, and a ride to a nearby medical centre. The incident was reported to police, but Cumberbatch chose not to pursue charges.
The King’s Cross confrontation comes as the actor remains one of the most talked-about figures in the MCU. Cumberbatch has played Doctor Stephen Strange since his 2016 debut and starred in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022, though his involvement in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday — slated for December 18, 2026 — has yet to be officially confirmed. He’s denied being in Doomsday while simultaneously teasing that he’s “in a lot” when it comes to the 2027 sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.
For now though, the most pressing Marvel question isn’t about the Multiverse — it’s whether Benedict Cumberbatch ran that red light once or three times. He says once. The vigilante cyclist strongly disagrees.
