Bonnie Tyler is recovering after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, her team confirmed on Wednesday, May 6. The “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer, 74, has a home in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, and that’s where she was when the medical emergency unfolded.

“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery,” read the statement on her official website. “The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

TMZ, which first reported that she remained hospitalized following the procedure, learned that Tyler had been experiencing abdominal pain for several days before seeking medical help — and that doctors discovered an intestinal perforation requiring emergency intervention.

What’s Next for Her Tour

The timing couldn’t be more precarious for a performer who has been as active as ever. Tyler has a show scheduled in Malta on May 22, followed by a date in Germany on May 30, with festivals and solo shows spread across Europe through June, July, and August. Her team hasn’t said whether those dates will be canceled or rescheduled, and for now, fans are just hoping for good news on her recovery before any of that becomes a conversation.

She’s also slated to continue touring from October through December 17, ending with a homecoming show in Wales — the country where she was born Gaynor Sullivan in the town of Skewen.

A Career That Never Slowed Down

What makes this moment feel particularly jarring is how much momentum Tyler had heading into this spring. She dropped a new single, “Only Love,” on March 21, followed by “One World One Home” on April 24 — the latter produced in connection with the documentary Homeless, which recently began streaming on major platforms. For someone who’s been in the music industry for five decades and released 18 studio albums, she was showing absolutely no signs of coasting.

That’s been her position for years. “I’m doing all right. I’m quite fit for my age, thank God. And I’m never going to retire,” she told The Sun in 2021, adding with a grin that she looks to fellow Welsh icon Tom Jones for inspiration. “I look at Tom Jones, he’s amazing. His voice is as strong as ever — and he’s got 10 years on me.”

She’s had other health hurdles along the way. In 2023, the same year she received her MBE honor from Prince William at Windsor Castle, she underwent knee surgery — what she described as “washouts” rather than full replacements. “It turned out to be very successful,” she told The Mirror. “So, hopefully that will last for a long time.” She also credits a daily 20-minute Pilates routine — done right in her hotel rooms while on the road — for keeping her stage-ready.

The MBE itself was an emotional milestone. “I never ever thought I would have something like this,” she said after the ceremony. “My mother and father would be so proud. To be nominated for a Grammy was wonderful, but to be given an MBE for something I absolutely love doing is a highlight of my career.” She’s racked up three Grammy nominations over her career, all coming during the 1980s peak that made her a household name worldwide.

As for “Total Eclipse of the Heart” — the 1983 smash off Faster Than the Speed of Night that went to No. 1 and became one of the most recognizable power ballads in pop history — Tyler has never once grown tired of it. “Lots of people ask me, ‘Aren’t you fed up of singing it?’ But there is no way,” she said after accepting her MBE. “I love it and everybody does; it is a karaoke classic.”

She started singing at 17. More than 50 years later, she’s still out there doing it — and right now, all anyone wants is for her to get back on her feet. “I started singing when I was 17, and I never thought I’d still be doing it at this age,” she told The Mirror. “I know now that I will never retire.”

Get well soon, Bonnie.
