Renée Zellweger & Sissy Spacek Team Up for ‘A Woman in the Sun’

Two Oscar winners and one of Hollywood’s most exciting rising talents are coming together for what could be one of the most compelling dramas in years. Renée Zellweger and Sissy Spacek are set to star alongside Mia Threapleton in A Woman in the Sun, a new feature film written and directed by Julia Cox — and the whole package is heading to Cannes.

Cox, who broke through as the screenwriter behind the acclaimed Annette Bening and Jodie Foster film Nyad, is reuniting with Black Bear Pictures for the project. This time, though, she’s stepping behind the camera for her feature directorial debut — and the studio couldn’t be more confident in the move.

The film follows Claire Keating, played by Zellweger, a bartender living on Nantucket as part of the island’s dwindling middle class. Over the course of a single month, Claire’s world cracks open: her mother falls ill, her daughter moves back home, and she’s left with no choice but to face her past and take ownership of her future. Variety described the story as exploring “the beauty, agony, and hilarity of loving other people deeply” — a multi-generational portrait of a woman at a crossroads, both fragile and tough at once.

Spacek and Threapleton round out what is shaping up to be a remarkable cast. Spacek, a six-time Oscar nominee who won Best Actress for her iconic turn as Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner’s Daughter, most recently appeared opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love. Threapleton, meanwhile, is having a genuine moment — she just had a breakout turn in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme and is currently in production on Damien Chazelle’s untitled next film.

The Team Behind the Film

\n\n

Zellweger isn’t just starring — she’s producing through her company Big Picture Co. alongside Carmella Casinelli, with Kim Roth and Greg Gertmenian as co-producers. And she’s clearly passionate about what Cox has built on the page.

“Championing promising filmmakers like Julia has been central to Big Picture Co.’s mission since day one, and we’re thrilled to be part of this very special project and the team who will help realize Julia’s vision,” Zellweger said. “The script is a storytelling treasure, and Julia’s instincts set her apart as an emerging filmmaker. We can’t wait to get started.”

The film is being co-financed by Black Bear and Artists Equity — the production company founded by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Affleck, who serves as Artists Equity CEO, was effusive about Cox’s talent and what the project means for his company’s broader mission.

“Julia has proven herself as a writer, and I’m certain A Woman in the Sun will show the film world she’s equally gifted in the director’s chair,” Affleck said. “This is a moving, gripping exploration of a complex family dynamic with something lurking beneath the surface. For us, this is about finding meaningful ways to invest in filmmakers at every stage of their journey, and projects like this are exactly the kind of work we want to be a part of.”

Black Bear CEO Teddy Schwarzman, who worked closely with Cox on Nyad, was equally enthusiastic. “As soon as I met Julia, I knew she was destined to be an incredible director,” he said. “With A Woman in the Sun, she has created that perfect vehicle to transition from acclaimed writer to world-caliber director. The story is both singular and universal, and Julia will no doubt capture unforgettably rich performances from Renée, Sissy, and Mia.”

Black Bear will distribute the film in North America and the U.K., with Elevation Pictures handling Canada. The project will be introduced to international buyers during Cannes — meaning the industry is about to get its first real look at one of the more intriguing packages of 2026.

What This Means for Zellweger

\n\n

For Zellweger, this is a significant next chapter. The two-time Oscar winner — she took home the gold for Judy and Cold Mountain, with nominations for Bridget Jones’s Diary and Chicago — has been selective about her projects in recent years. She had a recurring role on Only Murders in the Building and returned last year for the fourth Bridget Jones film, Mad About the Boy. But a drama of this weight, with this cast, produced under her own banner? That’s a different kind of statement.

Cox also has another high-profile project in the pipeline — she wrote and executive produced Love of Your Life, directed by Oscar nominee Rachel Morrison and starring Margaret Qualley, Gabriel Basso, Aaron Pierre, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Catherine Keener.

\n\n

Production on A Woman in the Sun kicks off in September. Given the firepower assembled — in front of and behind the camera — it’s the kind of film that tends to have a long awards season life. Zellweger, Spacek, and Cox are a combination that’s hard to bet against.
