Survivor Greece has been pulled from the air after one of its contestants suffered a devastating injury during a break from filming — an accident that could have cost him his life.
Stavros Floros, a 21-year-old beekeeper, was spearfishing off the coast of Saona Island in the Dominican Republic on May 10 when a tourist boat struck him. The vessel’s outboard engine propellers partially amputated his lower left leg and caused severe trauma to his right ankle. He was rushed to a local hospital — a journey his father said took roughly 40 minutes as Floros suffered significant blood loss — and has since been stabilized in the intensive care unit.
Production company AcunMedya confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that it happened “outside the competitive process of the reality show.” “From the very first moment, there was an immediate response to provide assistance and safely transport the injured contestant,” the company said, “while the competent port authorities are investigating the causes of the incident in order to fully determine the circumstances.” Floros, they added, “remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition and is out of danger.”
A statement posted to the show’s official Facebook account also revealed that a medical airlift to a specialized center in the United States was being considered once his condition allows for the transfer.
What Happened on the Water
Authorities and AcunMedya both noted that Floros was “diving without a surface marker buoy in an area frequented by tourist vessels” at the time of the accident — a detail that has become central to the investigation. His father, however, pushed back on that account, telling Greek media that divers had placed surface marker buoys in the water before the incident.
Dominican authorities have since opened criminal proceedings against the captain of the tourist boat involved. A closed-door hearing was scheduled in Santo Domingo to determine whether the operator would remain in detention or be granted bail or house arrest. Court documents classify the case as bodily harm under Article 309 of the Dominican Penal Code, and the boat’s pilot has been officially listed as under arrest.
His Mother’s Words Say Everything
Despite everything, Floros appears to be holding on to something most people in his position would struggle to find. In comments to Greek media, his mother shared what her son told her from his hospital bed: “Mom, why should I be sad? I’m alive.”
It’s the kind of line that stops you cold.
The Show Goes Dark
Greek broadcaster SKAI Television, which airs Survivor Greece, announced the show would be suspended until the investigation is complete. “Until the causes of the incident are fully investigated, the television broadcast of the program is being suspended,” SKAI said, adding that it would “contribute in every possible way” to Floros’ treatment, hospitalization, and rehabilitation — even while noting that production is carried out “exclusively under the control and responsibility” of AcunMedya.
The timing is notable. Survivor Greece is currently in its 13th season, which premiered earlier this year as the No. 1 show in its timeslot in Greece. It’s a massive franchise in the country, and the suspension has left a significant hole in SKAI’s primetime lineup.
For now, the focus is entirely on Floros and his recovery. “Our thoughts are with him and his family, who will soon be by his side,” the show’s Facebook statement read. What comes next for the season — and for the young man at the center of all of this — remains in the hands of doctors and investigators.
